Although I could have titled this ANOTHER BUCKET LIST COIN, that would be a false statement. A Liberty Cap Half Dime was simply never in my thoughts for ever finding one. Somewhat in conjunction and rather ironic, I have been searching for old coins now for 44 years with a detector and had never found a half dime and now I have recovered 2 in my last three hunts. Could there be another there?
The last two mornings I have braved the elements and hunted the same area that I recovered the other half dime from. No silver coins yesterday, but did manage what appears to be a link of sorts from a necklace or bracelet with I L O E on it. No markings, but it tests silver. Besides it and a few pieces of clad and Mem cents, I recovered a 1919 wheat cent an a 1903 I H cent.
This mornings hunt beckoned me back to the same area and after a kind of chilly 2 1/2 hours of hunting with little of consequence besides 3 green wheat cents (18d, 27 & 35) in my water bottle, I was beginning to ease my way in the direction of my auto. Probably within about 50 feet of where I recovered the other 1841o half dime I got a small wisp of high tone that just wouldn't go away. It was pretty faint with a reading in the mid 70's and showing a depth of 6". I had dug a very small washer a little earlier and this sounded exactly like it. Anyway, dug a 5" about, deep plug and checked the loose dirt and got a good hit. Moved some dirt around with the pin pointer and spotted a small smokey colored disk. I thought to myself, "simply no way." Carefully brushed off some of the dirt and saw the 1836 right off, followed by the Liberty Cap silhouette. She has been a well traveled lady and holed, but she is quite beautiful to me. 1836 just happens to be my oldest silver coin, too.
The last couple of mornings I have had the stock 11" coil on. My settings, and they seldom change, are Pro Zero mode, 0 disc. iron audio off and 8 bars of sen. My ground balance on this spot with the 11" coil is usually right around 84-86. Merry Christmas, one and all. HH jim tn
