Last Couple Hunts With Lots Of Coins & Relics

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
I've been able to get out a few times over the last two weeks. The temperature here has been awesome for December and has allowed me to get out and dig a few more keepers for the year. I got in two good hunts at an old school spot where the school is long gone and is now just an empty lot. I was able to get permission to hunt and got the normal response of "it's been gone over a few times by some guys" and I replied the same with "maybe they left me a few things" and went on down to hunt. Well after two hunts about 2 hours each I ended up with 9 silver coins, 7 Buffalos, a nice 1882 Indian and the normal handful of Wheaties. I also found a cool Chicago World's Fair token from the 30's and one of my favorite finds this year, I dug right at dark last night, is the sterling Paratrooper Jump Wings. I'm very happy to have dug these. I imagine they are WWII era according to some of the other finds like the 2 War Nickels, but I'm not for sure. Another cool find I made from an old house site was the 1943 2 Francs from the Vichy Regime of France during WWII. It says "WORK-FAMILY-FATHERLAND" It never gets old digging and researching the little pieces of history we find. I included another group of finds from another old school site that I've had good luck with and pulled a few more keepers from there last week as well. I hope this spring like weather holds out a little while longer for us all. Good luck & Happy Hunting! David

Especially like the Paratrooper Jump Wings and the Worlds Fair souvenir... Finding silver is also a favorite of mine...

Dave, super job. You've found some really good sites there. Don't suppose that 1916 merc has a mint mark on it...

Great pictures.

Thanks Robert. I enjoy the odd finds like the token and wings more than those old common coins. I spend a lot more time researching the history behind those type of finds. Old silver is just a bonus.

Thanks Ron. Yeah the 1916 Merc does have a mint mark on it and it's worn just enough to play tricks on you out in the field half covered in dirt. That S sure did have me going for a little bit. So close but so far... Ha!

Great finds on a "hard hunted" site!

I found a set of sterling paratrooper wings earlier this year and discovered that you can somewhat date them by looking at the back marks. Mine turned out to be late WWII.

Thanks Tenspeed. That's awesome on getting an age for your wings. I have looked at a bunch online and there's a ton of different hallmarks/companies that have made them over the years. These just have sterling on the back. I would like to know if they are WWII era.

Nice finds Dave, congrats.-------I think the cat approves of the stock coil you're using!

Thanks D&P. I've been telling everyone the cat is my new pinpointer. And believe it or not that's the Ultimate 13" coil I've been using 98% of the time this year. It's a great coil.

Nice finds Dave! really cool paratrooper wings, token and foreign coin. That's a big cat you got there.

Thanks FPD. Yeah that cat followed me around the whole time and was my helper on a couple of digs. I'm telling everyone it's my new pinpointer.

Congrats on another great bunch of finds Dave !
