Last 3 Hunts...

Howdy--

The weather here has been beautiful detecting weather - in the high 60's and low 70's. It sure beats swinging the coil when it's 110 in the shade (and there is no shade!). Fortunately I was able to arrange my schedule to be able to take advantage of this good weather.

A friend of mine, Kenneth, gave me a call and told me about an old house that had recently been torn down and cleared. He had hunted it the day before and dug 2 mercs and several wheat cents. He invited me to join him for another go at it. My batteries were charged and I was ready to go in 10 minutes. Upon arrival at the site, he pointed out where he dug the mercs and the wheats and went right back to that area. I could see his tracks in the sandy soil and the places where he had dug the day before so I looked for areas that appeared to be unhunted. Along the side fence there were tumbleweeds so I went in that area to hunt. I kicked the tumbleweeds out of the way and hunted that strip of area. I was rewarded with a nice 1942-D merc, some play coins, a 1945-D silver Jefferson and 5 wheat cents and 3 marbles. Kenneth dug a few wheat cents and a couple marbles.

I soloed for a 2 hour hunt at a vacant lot where in the past I had dug several mercs and other silver coins. Just to see if I could squeeze out another coin or 2. I got a 1959-D Roosevelt and 9 wheat cents. I dug 4 of them in one hole. One of them is a 1943 steel cent. It's rusty and magnetic. I can just barely see the outline of Lincoln.

On my last hunt with my friend, Robert, we went back to the same site where I dug the 1959-D Roosevelt. Robert has only been detecting for about a year and has not dug a mercury dime yet (although he has dug other silver coins including Walking Liberty & Franklin Halves). I thought that he might have a chance to dig one at my "secret site". Well as fate would have it, I got the merc. The 1936 merc gave a VERY weird signal. It bounced between 19 and 60 @ 1". Something told me to dig it. When I recovered it there was the rusty nail and the piece of copper wire in the the pile of dirt. Also a few inches away at about 8" depth there is a large iron pipe. I must have swung my coil over that merc a dozen times and either was at the wrong angle or swinging the coil too fast to stop and dig it. Sometimes because of a coins close proximity to trash they can give weird signals. It would have made my day if Robert had dug it but maybe next time. Best of luck and...

Very nice coins! It's always important to listen to that inner voice on those weird targets and "dig it!" We are fortunate to be able to hunt comfortably this time of year...

Thanks for sharing your hunt with us. Those teardowns can be really tricky. What coil do you usually use on a trashy site like that?

Sounds like my story digging a Rosie with a Buffalo Nickle in the hole.

Howdy Gandorf--

Most of the time at those trash-heavy sites I use the 4X6 Shooter. At sites such as this I believe that target separation is more important than depth. It never ceases to amaze me how many shallow good targets that I dig at heavily hunted sites using the 4X6 coil. If there is not a lot of surface trash I'll use the 5.3 or 6X10 DD. Best of luck and...

Howdy CZconnoisseur--

Thanks. You are correct. It often pays to listen to that "inner voice". I hope to get out and swing the coil this week end. Best of luck to you and...

That's it, daddyflea. There are often coins or other good targets on top of, next to or beneath other targets that causes our V's to give a signal that isn't a "by the book" pure or clean signal. Those are the ones that can really make your day! Best of luck and...

Nice job George. It's not looking like i'll get out until after the new year if the ground isn't frozen solid.

Really sweet results. Great post.
I gave my V3i a work out this week but I sure wish we had temps like yours. We can still dig...but for how long...? Hmmm...butane torch and a 3" chisle...
HH - Bruce

Thanks Bruce. Butane torch and 3" chisel! Haha. That reminds me of a hunt about 40 years ago in western NY. I had found an old abandoned log cabin with an earth floor. It had newspapers on the interior wall for insulation (dated 1923). It was spring and the ground was still frozen. I got a big signal along the wall and fought through the icy rock-hard soil for what seamed to be an eternity. Of course I had visions of a dutch oven filled with gold coins. Haha. Then I looked up and saw an old exhaust pipe from a stove directly above the 3 foot deep hole that I had dug. I then realized that detectors didn't only detect metal BELOW the coil. I still laugh at myself for that one.

I hope you get some good weather so you can get out and dig some goodies! Best of luck and...

Thanks Jimmy. Hopefully you will get some decent weather and can get out swinging the coil. We had an ice storm the last 2 days. No snow - just ice. It's too dangerous to leave the house. Most people around here don't know how to drive on ice or snow. There were quite a few accidents. It's supposed to warm up this week end and I have some "New Ground" to hunt. Best of luck and...
