Howdy--
The weather here has been beautiful detecting weather - in the high 60's and low 70's. It sure beats swinging the coil when it's 110 in the shade (and there is no shade!). Fortunately I was able to arrange my schedule to be able to take advantage of this good weather.
A friend of mine, Kenneth, gave me a call and told me about an old house that had recently been torn down and cleared. He had hunted it the day before and dug 2 mercs and several wheat cents. He invited me to join him for another go at it. My batteries were charged and I was ready to go in 10 minutes. Upon arrival at the site, he pointed out where he dug the mercs and the wheats and went right back to that area. I could see his tracks in the sandy soil and the places where he had dug the day before so I looked for areas that appeared to be unhunted. Along the side fence there were tumbleweeds so I went in that area to hunt. I kicked the tumbleweeds out of the way and hunted that strip of area. I was rewarded with a nice 1942-D merc, some play coins, a 1945-D silver Jefferson and 5 wheat cents and 3 marbles. Kenneth dug a few wheat cents and a couple marbles.
I soloed for a 2 hour hunt at a vacant lot where in the past I had dug several mercs and other silver coins. Just to see if I could squeeze out another coin or 2. I got a 1959-D Roosevelt and 9 wheat cents. I dug 4 of them in one hole. One of them is a 1943 steel cent. It's rusty and magnetic. I can just barely see the outline of Lincoln.
On my last hunt with my friend, Robert, we went back to the same site where I dug the 1959-D Roosevelt. Robert has only been detecting for about a year and has not dug a mercury dime yet (although he has dug other silver coins including Walking Liberty & Franklin Halves). I thought that he might have a chance to dig one at my "secret site". Well as fate would have it, I got the merc. The 1936 merc gave a VERY weird signal. It bounced between 19 and 60 @ 1". Something told me to dig it. When I recovered it there was the rusty nail and the piece of copper wire in the the pile of dirt. Also a few inches away at about 8" depth there is a large iron pipe. I must have swung my coil over that merc a dozen times and either was at the wrong angle or swinging the coil too fast to stop and dig it. Sometimes because of a coins close proximity to trash they can give weird signals. It would have made my day if Robert had dug it but maybe next time. Best of luck and...
