Laser Scout

I don't know what the equivalent machine is in the US, but anyway- I've just got into this hobby and bought myself a 2nd hand Scout on a recommendation. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has one or has used one. Any tips you can share? One thing that foxed me was that I used it over the weekend in plough-soil (most of which was on my boots!) and got some very clear signals, but after digging down and checking again I got nothing (also nothing from the spoil). This happened more than once. Any ideas?
Confused,
Mick

Hello Mick & welcome to the hobby
I think the scout was based on the old cutles u-max.The false signals could be caused byhot rocks(coke)thrown out by old manure spreading. They can give a good signal, only on one side and nothing on the other.
This link,,Gary a great bloke who has used the scout.

This may sound daft Mike but did you have steel toe caped boots on when you was detecting . Also what size search head have you got on your detector .The Scout for its price and size is a very good detector I have seen the Scout with the 7" search head set up to find coins under a selection of iron bars .You might want to test the detector in doors with a selection of objects to see if your detector is accepting some things and then discriminating the same things out.If it is you may find that you have a loose wire or a faulty search head .
At the moment i would say steel toe caps
All the best Les

Keep plugging away, and don't get p**sed off! the next signal could be a gold noble sometimes deep iron can give you a good signal (with any machine), then when you dig it out, your machine can 'read' it better, and discriminates it out so you don't hear that target anymore ... As for the steel toecap boots, I can admit that I wore them for the first couple of detecting trips I made and I have seen plenty of people do the same thing since! so if that's the problem, don't worry about it Any more questions? you know where to post them HH charlie(UK)

Thanks for the tips, gents. No steel in my boots as far as I know and I made sure all other stuff, like my trowel, were well out of the way. I read elsewhere last night that a disappeared signal could have something to do with having removed some earth so that the coil is then working over 3-4 inches of air. For the record, its the 7" standard coil.
I'll certainly be back out with it, once I get rid of the stinking cold I caught last time I used it.
