Larger coil for the CZ......stock or sunray?

Neil

Well-known member
Has anyone used both of these coils and if so can you tell me which you prefer and why?

Thank you,
Neil

it's 2" bigger for more ground coverage, concentric, and seemingly better balanced than the Fisher 10.5" with that solid foot in the middle. In my tests, it was just as deep & deeper on some items too, and easier to pinpoint with the round open circle in the middle...
I use mine for large open field hunting, and even beaches.

to buy at a much price. I can't speak as to the Sun Ray coil because I haven't used it. I'm sure it gives wonderful performance though. I haven't seen anything but positive posts about it (both performance and weight). I went with the stock 10.5 cz coil because they are ready available for $65 to $85 (used) on ebay quite often. That's just too good a price to pass up. I used mine for about 2 hours the other day and got good depth and also was pleasantly surprised at the ease of pinpointing. Probably wouldn't go wrong with either coil but the stock 10.5 would probably be easier to find used at less than half the cost of new on ebay or here on the classifieds. I did notice a weight difference from the stock 8" spider coil...but that was to be expected.
Good luck

Sunray covers more ground is about the same weight pinpoints super and adds a couple of inches to the stock 8...On the downside its quite pricey new and even used..Gosh I wish I had one when I hunted Eastern beaches for the coverage alone...As my stock 8 will grab a silver dime 10 to 12 inches and I don't hunt the above areas and don't want to dig any deeper than that my stock 8 will serve me fine...I have used both and the stock 10.5 also covered a lot of ground, pinpointed well about the same weight and added a little extra depth....This is in my neck of the woods and your area may differ...On the upside it can be had quite reasonable used on E-bay or the classifieds....

Hi Neil,

I haven't used my CZ 7 Apro in a long time but I use to use it all the time at the beach with the 10.5" coil and it worked great. I also used the 10.5" at the parks and I got a little more depth with it. I have the Sunray 12.5" coil for my Explorer and it's a great coil.

If you hit the beach a lot or hit huge fields I'd go with the Sunray 12.5" coil for the coverage. If you hit parks more and like to hit those trashy spots I'd go with the Fisher 10.5" coil.

You can't go wrong with either one.

Thomas J. Dankowski writes this about the 10.5 spider coil.
