Large Treasure In UK

From an article: A total of 1,345 items have been examined by experts, although the list includes 56 clods of earth which have been X-rayed and are known to contain further metal artifacts, meaning the total number of items is likely to rise to around 1,500.
Experts have so far established that there are at least 650 items of gold in the haul, weighing more than 5kgs (11lb), and 530 silver objects totaling more than 1kg (2.2lb) in weight.

It was found with a 14 year old Whites Spectrum, I'm guessing that would have been the Eagle model, (before the XLT).

Quite a feather in White's cap !!

Sorry to be a downer here, but I recall some years back, a similar Roman hoard was found in Britain with a Tesoro detector. A big hoopla ensued - the Tesoro Silver Sabre II was the detector to have, since it was the unit that found the treasure... well according to the hype.
I bought one, in fact, shortly thereafter, my very first detector.

But in both cases, the finding was dead easy and there were targets scattered all over the place. The earlier one was found by a guy looking for a hammer, which had fallen off a tractor. The same tractor that had plowed the treasure to the surface in the first place.

Same deal with the current find - Mr. Herbert wasn't doing anything special and an older Eagle Spectrum certainly cannot be called 'special equipment'. He said, in fact, that he spent 4 days finding artifacts scattered all over the site. That's when he called in the help of the authorities. He simply tired of finding the stuff, and it dawned on him he would need help.

Doesn't sound like the detector made the difference, to be honest. I wager any decent instrument would have served as well.
Although you are right about one thing; It will be spun as if White's had a hand in it - and many people will believe it.

I know it didn't matter. A radio shack detector could have found this. But it's just a matter of interest as part of the news of the find.

Most folks would like to know what equipment was being used in a find of this magnitude.

I suppose it did come out sounding a little pissy, on my part. Sorry 'bout that. I just feel it in my gut when people fall for the hype that will ensue, when it was the place that made the difference, and not the gear.

And you're right, it certainly does look like an Eagle Spectrum.

Maybe 14 years ago he would have bought a different brand, and it did not perform up to his expectations, and chunked it in the closet. We may not be hearing of his great discovery today.
