Large objects

I often get a signal that there is a quarter right on the surface but when I start trying to get it, it is not there. I then swing the coil over the spot and slowly raise the coil as I swing and I continue getting a signal even when the coil is 12" above the grass. This tells me there is something large in the ground. I do not dig those because I don't want to make a bathtub sized crater in the lawn of one of the lovely parks in my town. My guess is that it is a car part or stove pipe or some other worthless item, Or it could be a 55 gallon drum filled with $20 gold pieces.

Have any of you gotten such signals?

Could be any kind of large item. I have found long bolts, axe heads and several steel plates. Water and drainage pipes are detectable if not buried too deep or it may be a piece left behind from a pipe repair job. Could be a part off of lawn equipment, or a murder weapon or a 55 gallon drum of $20 gold pieces. I would put my money on the steel/iron plate or pipe though. I don't think too many dropped coins will sink more than eight inches or so.

Many of our soccer field and playgrounds are dirt brought in from some where else.
When I hunt these areas its hard to identify the junk from the good stuff.
Lots of pieces of iron and old car parts and household items in the ground.
Have been lucky on occasions by finding old coins thought.
Always hesitant to dig these signals unless they fall into the good signals,
as I don't want to mess up those fields.

If your not already in all metal mode, you can switch to it and (size/trace) the target.
Another trick depending on which machine you have...like my Land Star,if the target response in A M
mode is too loud to size the target ..you can go to the edge of the target where the tone starts rising slightly
and press the auto trac button to detune to a softer more manageable tone.
hope this helps
