Large Item

Tell me about the large item reading on the MXT. Is it always correct? What does it consider "big item". I never dig these signals but wonder what it is and how big is big? when does it decide to classify it as a big item?

Coins on the surface can do it. Aluminum/steel can up to very deep, sprinkler heads in parks or utility cables, hot rocks, mineralized soil-epecially iron, buried weapons, coin hoards, you name it... Usually can't disc high even to get rid of the overdrive. Dig when in doubt. <img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad"> In the UK it can be a hoard of bronze age axes, coins, weapons, etc.

I was detecting around a super old home in a well kept neighborhood and had found several merc dimes and a buff. nickel. Hit a big item signal, well there used to be a slate rock walk way from the house to the well. The item was inder one of the rocks, I probed around the rock which had 2 inches of grass on top of it and the rock was big as a 14 inch car tire. I decided not to dig then after a while curiousity got the best of me, I took a large knife and cut all the way around the rock, it was a cast iron skillet under the rock, which I layed back in the whole it came out of and carefully replaced the rock and you would never know it was there. So in that case a big item was exactly that. And yes I have also had surface items show as big items. Found a silver skeleton head ring in a park on the groung I almost passed up because it read big item. Anyways the only way to know for sure is to dig it and see.

Well I have gotten a lot of these signals and always just pass on them so I was wondering what kinds of things would read big item. I thought maybe it had to be something pretty bigger like bigger than a pop can. I usually just get a penny reading on them.

Yeah me too. I always imagined them being a treasure chest full of gold !! Didn't take long to get over that notion, but ya never know.

I was detecting in a stream once and got a Large Item notice.
I dug an old shovel head out from under a big rock.
When it doubt, dig!
