Large Coil?

BryanM362

I am considering getting a larger than stock coil, for certain sites. Would love to hear peoples opinions and experiences with these.

How much depth can I expect to gain?

I see SEF has a 18" x 15", and a15" x 12", and then there's the 13" ultimate coil. Advantages/disadvantages of one over the others?

Thanks, Bryan

I have the 15x12 SEF and other than it being HEAVY to swing all day, it does a great job. Suprisingly it has good separation and accurate pinpointing as well. I never really use it much so I can't testify about depth but I know that it will provide depth way past the stock coils range but the caveat to that great depth is unreliable TID readings.
Short story: found an old school and hit it with my stock coil and dragged up a couple Mercs and a Rosie in a small area. Went back the next day with the 15x12, just to cover more ground with it and found an old silver earring and a hair clip that the stock coil missed. I know I was over the places I found my targets at because I dug within 6 inches of them the day before. I even commented on here about the sensitivity of the big coil. Bigger coils are not known to be sensitive. I have the 8x6 SEF and of the three, its hard to get me to use anything but the stock coil unless the trash is unusually bad. Around here targets are just not that deep so the stock coil gives plenty of depth and more than enough sensitivity. Those big coils are arm breakers after a few hours!

The 15" WOT by Coiltek is a bit lighter but your wallet will be as well. I think like all the Minelab stuff it's overpriced but, the market bears it so that's the way it is. Fortunately they show up used now and again for less than a new SEF. The newer models appear to have a tighter coiling on the cord and you can probably get by without another lower shaft but the older models are a pain to thread through without a helper cord. As far as performance goes I can't make a direct comparison to the SEF but, it will get you a bit of depth over the Procoil but not the nearly 50% the size difference would indicate. I might get two inches more in my dirt---might. It handles moderate trash if you go slow with good TID but you have to take extra care to be sure you're only working one target at a time.
I made a great swinging aide out of dog harness called a 'Yuppie Puppie no pull harness' for $12 and an adjustable bungy rope that allows me to swing it as long I need to . If the trash get's alittle too bad I'll reduce sens. to auto or less and use it for sweeping a park. Most of the time auto 3 is about the max sens. I find comfortable to run. I have had no problem picking up those post clamping buttons that hold pins and ear rings on from several inches down ---usually 12-03 to 12-08 readings.

Thanks for the responses guys. Good info!

The types of sites I had in mind. for the larger coil, are the ones with some fill dirt. For instance there isa park, that was an old home site. I have found several good coins there (oldest is an 1857 Large Cent), but a lot of the dirt has been turned over, or moved, to make a drainage ditch for what is now a park. I was thinking there are probably more coins under the dirt they dug up to make the ditch.... It's not real trashy, and maybe I could reach them with the larger coil.

It would be hard to justify spending the money on a new coil for just one site unless I KNEW there was gold buried deep. I am going to expirement one day and take my 15x12 over an area that I hit with my stock coil and see if I do get any deep hits. Like I said, the SEF was more sensitive but never got a chance to try depth comparison. For what its worth, I once dug out a Barber Dime in over 14" of sand with the stock coil. Took me almost and hour because the sand was dry and the hole kept caving in. I almost thought I was getting falsed until my pinpointer finally found it. I think you will get good depth stock. Turn up your sensetivity and give it a try.

Love my NEL Hunter so much the stock coil hasn't been out of the closet since I got it. There very well made, reasonably priced plus you get a 10% discount for being a findmall member.

I checked out Windy City Metal Detector website and I found out that they have new NEL Metal Detector Coils. 15 inch DD Attack coil for Minelab Explorer/Safari/E-Trac. $230. I don't know if its new or not. I wondered, anyone use it and how good it is? It look good to me but I don't know if its good to find deep coins.

I have a new 15" WOT. Amazingly sensitive and deep. Just too heavy for my taste. I've only used it about 30 mins.

I run an Ultimate 13 pretty much full time unless I'm in really dense trash. Haven't used my stock coil in over a year. You can run the manual sens very hot compared to the stock coil and it hits harder on deep silver and copper. By that I mean it's a louder signal, you can't miss it. I've also done well on salt water beaches with it.

I've got the big one and it's too heavy for me. I'm willing to trade or sell it. I'm going to lose money on it, but it's not going to get much use. It's in great condition if you're interested.
Thanks
Andy

I picked up the NEL BIG coil if for nothing else the bragging rights!

Only used it a few times unfortunately in junk infested areas where IMO a big coil is next to useless.
A real PITA to pinpoint with junk all around. I did find a silver nickel, a couple wheaties and a bunch of clad with it.
Gotta admit after a half hour of swinging that thing i was ready to switch back to my trusty Tornado coil.

Plan on using the BIG this Spring in some farm fields where hopefully it'll do better.
Knowing what i know now, you'd be better off going the next size up, maybe something like the Ultimate or NEL Tornado, and progress upwards.

As far as a big coil being a deep seeker, that's true but only by a couple inches maybe 3 in excellent conditions.
Another possible disadvantage of a big coil is if its used in EMI prone areas. Its basically a larger antenna meaning it'll 'receive' more EMI the smaller coils don't. That'll screw up the Signal/Noise ratio up to the control box. This could mean having to crank down the sensitivity negating some of those depth capabilities.

If you gotta have a big coil, make sure its used in the right areas.

I've got the 13 Ultimate and it does a great job in my area. Haven't picked out anything deeper than 10" but it was a Barber half and was able to see it with a nail to the side of the hole when I removed the large plug. Great separation. Also can swing it all day as it seems no heavier than the Pro coil to me.

I have a 15" WOT coil I used this past fall in one farm field I wanted to hit for a while. Got some great relics and 2 Large cents (one is an 1826). It's the only field I planned on hitting because I knew there was a school there back in the 1800's. I have it listed in the For Sale section. If interested PM me.
