Large Cent

I asked my father to show me and my brother where some old homesteads were and he led us to one of the earliest homesteads in my part of North Central Missouri. We walked back and forth in a patch of woods for awhile and then after scratching his head for a minute he pointed at the ground and said "This is the spot". Less than 30 minutes later I had a quarter signal which my MXT PRO was only about 75% sure that it was a quarter and it pinpointed at about 4 inches. In this scenario I was already doubting that the target was a quarter because at 4 inches it would have NO doubt that it was detecting a quarter IF IT WAS A QUARTER. So I dug the hole with small expectations when I pulled out a hunk of copper that was slightly larger than a quarter. Still covered in dirt and unable to read anything on it I was smiling ear to ear! I knew I was holding a Large copper and I quit detecting just so I could go home to wash it and find the date. This spot is now on my secret list but I have been there 3 times and this is the best coin from that site so far.

I think those are quite awesome finds. Is that a drawer/cabinet knob that's resembles a flower? Really cool things all together. HH, Nancy

Top1dog, I believe the bigsmith button is from overalls.

Nancy, The flower item is a pin, copper with remnants of gold plate. I assume its a brooch. I don't really know what makes a brooch any different than a pin. lol

Thanks for the props! I don't find the great finds very often but these keep me motivated in between. I think its high time I come across another INDIAN! I love those IH cents.

By the way, I have kept almost all of the junk shotshells I've found. I think I will make an organized display and add information and dates for each different one. That way even junk shotshells will be a thrill to find one I DONT have yet! There are tons of varities too, especially when you consider each type has several gauges, 20, 16, 12, 10 ect. They are worthless but tell a little bit about the area you are hunting since you can date the shells within a couple decades, even closer on some shells.

I suggest looking closely at your pics after you post them because even though I cleaned each one and looked at them all I only just now realized I have a 16 Gauge Red Head in there. Not that its TOO special but I cant believe I didn't notice it, When it was still wet it was unreadable. lol

That would make a neat display with all the shot shells. And is the Red Head a unique one? I'm a redhead and I'm unique......Just ask Larry! HH, Nancy

Aaron how did you go about cleaning your large cent? Great find! I also found one this weekend. My first! I ran it under water to clean it up a bit, but it looks like it could still use some cleaning.

Nancy, its from the 1940's and made by Montgomery Wards. Here is a list of shotshells they produced.

Whitetail, Mine was not hard to clean. I very lightly brushed it clean with a toothbrush under running water. You should be carefull not to leave scratches with the brush and don't do this on silver. For tougher build-up, soak in olive oil as long as needed. Retreive and retry the toothbrush to see if the build-up comes off. I figure its ok to leave some age layer on the older coins to preserve authenticity.

Those are some really nice finds. That is the third large penny I have seen this week on the forum. One was mine, an 1854, I have an MXT pro and my meter read a quarter or ring. When I dug it up, the big penny was sitting straight up. I got a glimpse of the edge of copper and I thought "gold". But I am more than happy with it. My 92 year old father was with me, and he is still talking to everyone about it.

Well, it sounds like you have a honey hole. I want to find some relics too, but I have only been looking for coins and jewelery. Hope you fill a tub full, good luck.

Yep, Mine read quarter as well. But it was only about half sure that it was a quarter and at 4 inches, like my large cent, quarters blow your ears off and the detector KNOWS that it is a quarter. This is a good example of trusting the detector even though its saying 'quarter', its also telling you that its not sure what its looking at so you should also consider non-quarter possibilities.

I'm always in coin/jewelry mode, I just dig alot of junk signals and find odd stuff too.
