Large Cent from hammered spot in the woods

My coil stopped working the other day. I was talking with Don and Carol, members of my club and they both have CTX's also and they had 2 17" loops. They said they rarely use both of them and might want to sell one and offered to let me try it out. I picked it up and decided to give it a try after dinner last night. I went to a spot that I had pounded and also brought 5 other people to detect at. Last time I was there with Don and Carol none of us found anything. It's been a great spot and produced seated quarters, a seated half dollar, Indians and a half dozen LC's. I figured maybe the 17" loop might help. It did. I was there about 45 minutes and get a digable signal and low and behold, out pops an 1846 large cent. It was pretty close to a small sapling and I couldn't even get the loop flat on the ground, but it was a signal worth digging. It was just about dark as you can tell from the picture taken at the site, but I plan on going back to see what else I can pull. I guess I'll be buying this loop from them.

That is an impressive LC, and in great shape! Thanks for sharing! :clapping:

This is one good looking large cent. Hope you find more.

Great coin, love those green large cents.

beautiful large cent! Congrats!

That's one good looking LC. On my bucket list too but not sure there's to much of a chance in my area. Son lives in OH may get a chance over there.

Robert, I cleaned it in hot peroxide. Keep in mind, most large cents will be destroyed this was as frequently the detail is in the crud. Once you remove the crud, you remove the details. After a close look I could determine that this piece was that corroded and there was good copper underneath the crud. I've found about 25 large cents in the past year or so as well as more than a half dozen colonials and quickly learned that you can destroy a coin this way. Many of the coppers that come out of the ground are very corroded and all you have left of the detail is the surface scale. Most I clean with a little liquid soap and water using an old toothbrush to gently brush away the loose surface dirt. It's unfortunate they corrode the way they do. Earlier this year I found an 1804 LC which is a key date. Look it up. If it hadn't been corroded it would have graded a fine to very fine. See pic.

Beautiful coin! Now I want to put my 17" back on, not that it will help me find a large cent in NW Oregon!

Nice find Don! The 17 inch coil is all that I really use anymore when I'm hunting these old foundations and fields
