Large Cent and then Police!!

Well-known member
Went to one of the local schools, which i have been to a hundred times and got a nice signal about 6 inches deep and out pops a 1857 largie..it amazes me what you find sometimes..the school was built in the 1930's..i thought wow i'm glad i came here today,i wonder what else i missed and then the cops showed up..the cop was super nice and was amazed by the large cent but said unfortunately someone ratted you out and that i would need written permission from the school in order to detect it,i've never run into this before...

Probably someone ratted on you because they think that is there spot to hunt. They didn't want anyone on there turf. Just go to the school superintendent to see if it is OK to hunt when the kids are not their. Good luck and have fun... KEN from Ind.

Always , no matter where, get permission to hunt.
Too many people get arrested for hunting public property that they think is ok....
As Ken said you probably stepped on someones toes or some one got run out before you.
I even saw one that got arrested for hunting inside a cemetery.
People who see you out there think you are finding gold coins all the time or a cache of silver coins.
They don't realize the actual work it takes to metal detecting.

i detect mostly schools and parks, and never ever had to get permission, never had an issue, everybody i've met have been great including cops..this was a single incident..if this becomes more regular my detectors will be sold...i hate people that can't mind their business, would they rather me be robbing them or commiting crimes.or looking for coins at the school?

Boy if that aint a tease for you to find that largie and then get kicked out... man that stinks... oh well , at least you got a cool coin for show and tell....congrats..

Nice find! It's getting more common to need permission to hunt public land, schools or parks. There is too many people with the help yourself attitude that hunt areas that common sense says "stay away". I've hunted schools for years and never a problem, but when you see a new project where the school board spent some big bucks, don't go digging it up. Or open a closed gate and go digging in an area used for seating in a outdoor study area.

i would never go through a gate ,or mess up a new site..the schools in my area do not have gates, and on top of that i have watched people trailer in go carts and use them for hours ,riding over the baseball field and all,and yet nothing was said..it's all bs!!

@undrpar, no don't take my comment as directed at you. I'm sure you play the game fair and the way it should be. My comment is from what I've seen and heard of from people in the past. I hunted a city park local to me and seen some real damage from holes left open and spent a good amount of time fixing them. I also one time got blamed for holes in another part of the park, but showed the groundskeeper the holes were from people practicing golf swings you could see the tear drop shape from the club cutting the ground. He agreed and said he would watch for them and let me go on detecting.

I didn't think it was toward me..i apoligize if it came across that way..i'm a little frustrated since yesterday..i mind my business, make sure the spot looks better than it did when i got there..cleaning up garbage left by other people and still get screwed..

I am new to the hobby I got my detector this passed winter and its stories like yours that make me hesitate from going out.I experienced a situation with my dog where a person from the neighbourhood came out yelling at me cause my dog was walking and i mean walking on his lawn. We have no sidewalks here and 3 feet from the road onto the lawn belongs to the city. I understand if i didn't clean up after my dog cause some people don't . The police officer said he would give me a ticket anyways for tress passing on private property even when the land i was on belongs to the city ,go figure.

In my area all the schools have been fenced with locked gates. Some even Have Large No Trespassing Signs.

Nice LC !

Sounds like you were the victim of some weaselly, communist nark. Be careful ... they are everywhere :look:

Great find! Sounds like a simple call and a meeting with the superintendent would be enough to make this a legit spot to search more

Underpar, great find. Talk to school super. Probably won[t mind. I've been run off here and there by nice cops, but crappy rules. I love my detector you sold me-Mark

Congrats on the large cent. I've been checked out by the police probably 10 times over 35 years. Most of them over the last 2 years. All have been very cordial and most were curious what I found. Did find out that one town had an ordinance against metal detecting because someone left big holes in a field and a kid broke his ankle. One drove up to me because someone in the park complained. I took out my park permit for metal detecting, which he didn't know existed, and explained exactly how I dig and cover my holes. He said he had absolutely no problem with metal detecting, but when someone complains he has to check it out. Overall my experience with the police had been very positive.

Great story: About 35 years ago I was heading to a school a few towns away with a friend at a little after midnight to do some detecting. Got stopped by the police as my car (1968 VW Bug) fit the description of a care someone was driving who tried to abduct a young woman. As I had just stopped for coffee at an all night place I had a witness as to where I had just been. Police asked where we were going. I told him we were looking for an old school nearby to go metal detecting. He said he knows the place and gave us a police escort to go metal detecting in the middle of the night. I'll never forget that one.
