lap top general question

The Shaw modem should provide the wireless signal for you, your laptop will find the signal and you will need a password perhaps to connect, call them and they will help you. I have found their support very good.

If your neighbors have not secured their wireless networks then they are careless with security and your machine could be at risk also just by using their network. Unless you have the right security, and i do not mean just an ordinary anti virus but malware and ID theft protection also, it is very unsafe when any hacker in the neighborhood could access your machine through that open network without you knowing it.
I have security systems in place on my laptop for that and i could not explain to you unless you were much more computer literate.
Oh hell i will try the easy way......get Malwarebytes pro version for your laptop, 25 bucks for a lifetime license and the single best anti malware/spyware security in the world! Here
or at least download the free version, keep it updated and scan at least once a week. The paid version is all automatic. It does NOT replace your anti virus program, but works with it and catches crap that your AV won't identify.

Special security precautions are also necessary when you use a public network like the "free WIFI" in malls and around places like Starbucks.

thanks for the warnings of free wi fi. What if used just to surf, with no passwords is it still bad? I have downloaded the registry and may buy very soon. I'm on a budget not cheap just on a bud jet :)

downloaded what registry? Do you mean Malwarebytes? I fully understand the budget bit, its my life.

you downloaded the right thing "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware version 1.45. Click on the update button and it will do it quickly, always use the quick scan, full scan is almost never necessary.
When you open the program UAC (User account control) will kick in asking for permission to run if you have Vista or Windows 7, just allow it.
When i had the free version i updated it every day cause it only takes seconds.

ever since you told me about it a couple years ago. Good program

Spyblaster, Ad-ware and Security Essentials and Spy-bot.... Between them all I stay pretty safe... Even with them, some of the emails are tricky, look legit and I've gotten nailed on What looked to be legal Virus program only to get trashed. I run Vista, Win 7 and XP so some are on one system, some on another. Updating is the key.... Got one malware enbedded in a video clip also.....

Better safe than sorry for sure...
