Lanyards?

Maui Mike

New member
Aloha everyone. well about 2 months into what will be a life long hobby...
Heres a quick question for all.. Lanyards? one for my detector and one for my scoop too?.. while in the water is the question... i will be getting my D-scoop from Nuttall on tuesday.. am following the ups tracking.. it arrived on the West coast this morning.. i can almost smell it!! hehehe.. so Lanyards?.. do tell, your input is most welcome Shaka \OOO/ Mikey:thumbup:

my thought being.... beable to let my MD be beside me if i release it to scoop, didn't want to have it hanging by the head phones cord.. and scoop attached so i didn't have to hold while sweeping... was told to put a piece of a noodle on my scoops handle.. to make it float when i am not holding it.. sounds like good idea.. thoughts?

We don't have heavy surf where I hunt, but I'm still more comfortable using a web belt and 2-cords with quick opening (pull-lanyard) type disconnects (known by some other name, I'm sure, in boating circles). I use waders and the belt keeps the water out (mostly).

They are available at boating supply places (not inexpensive, but how do you value your life in heavy surf??) and offer you a way to easily dump your gear should you lose your footing and have to bail out!!!

!-to my detector and 1-to my floating sifter screen.

I put (glue with rubber cement) enough neoprene (not plastic, it gets waterlogged) pipe insulation on the handle to float the handle, but not the whole scoop. Don't want Ma Nature running away with it!!! (A kids hollow swimming noodle will probably work as well, but the rubber cement may not be compatible with the plastic and I use plastic electrical tape to re-enforce the ends)

GL&HH Friend,

Cupajo

PS I have mixed emotions about lashing myself to my scoop even with the quick disconnect. It would require enough cord that becoming tangled could be an issue!!!

I'm dead against having anything strapped to my body when surf pirating, unless it is an inflateable life preserver. I've been hunting in hellacious conditions and never lost my detector or my scoop so I don't have a concern about that. What I am concerned about is being able to swim out of a rip tide if necessary, detectors and scoops are easily found or replaced if necessary but I've only got one life.
The foam on the handle thing I've tried but i found it was more of a nuisance than anything else, especially when digging where the positive bouyancy makes digging harder. I never use two hands on the scoop when digging anyways.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

Mahalo for everyone's input! where i search rip tides are not a worry....but surf is always an issue, unless it is dead calm.. not often here...lol

I have a short body board tethered to my waist and the scoop is tethered to that if I want to set the machine down it lay's on the board and the scoop the same thing. Dan
