Lanny from Alberta and I take to the fields for my Birthday

DOC

New member
Yesterday, April 20, was my 57th birthday. Can't think of a better way to spend it than to head to the gold fields with Lanny who was in town visiting his son Justin.

We didn't find one stinking piece of gold or even a meteorite, but we did start a nice tradition. At the end of the day Lanny wanted to give me a nugget, I told him I wouldn't take it unless he took one of mine. So we swapped nuggets. His nugget is going to go in my little display case with his name on it so I will always remember who it came from.

Here's some pictures from our little jaunt. We met up at 5 in the morning and got back about 6 at night. I took Lanny to some mines, he enjoyed seeing some of the historic mines of the area.

PLEASE take NOTE of the new improved DOC. I have lost 21 pounds on my diet so far, I am down to 159 lbs.

My 16 year old daughter, Alex, must have a recessive blonde gene. She said DAD, I fit into your blue jeans perfectly now. I said ALEX, "My size has changed, my blue jeans have not. They are all too big for me now. Do you think as I shrunk my blue jeans shrunk along with me? It's not that my jeans are smaller, it's that apparently last Sunday the KEISTER bunny visited you, and your BUTT is so big they fill out those jeans."

"DAD!" she screamed, "I mean they fit me in the length because I have short legs like you!"

I said she is 16, actually she will be 16 May 2nd, WORST DRIVER IN THE WORLD!

Thats pretty slick DOC, I have to get me a sticker like you have on the side of your truck, U.S> DEPARTMENT OF INTER. Official bussiness, Geological servey, or what ever it said, Not a bad Ideal. Did you guys try the platypus? Grubstake

Doc,

Sounds like you guys had a great time! My bet is Lanny will come up with a great story or poem about his visit to see Doc.

Doc, what was the secret to your losing all your weight??

I sure need to lose at least 30 pounds, but I hardly eat anything now, just a couple of trips a week to the Golden Corral all you can eat buffet, a quart of ice cream and some brownies each night, just before I go to bed..

I think it must be glandular..

~LARGO~

Lanny used it all day long, he said it finds bullets like no coil he has ever used. :surprised:

Man it is getting so pounded out there in Gold Basin, it isn't even funny.

DOC

Yeh DOC, that Platypus will sure find the bullits, but it will find gold too! Going to go with Shep up to the patch tomarrow, I'm going to get me a big nugget with mine. Bullets are just a little extra perk with that coil. The trik is don't go where they used it for a target range. I bet you, you took him out where you tried that new rifle your son put together for you. Ha! Ha! Grubstake

Sounds like me. Before the diet, I would eat maybe a granola bar for breakfast or a banana, two cups of coffee. I wouldn't eat any lunch.

Get home for dinner hungry enough to chew a coil cover, eat like a pig. I love good bread and butter. Bread and pasta are my downfalls. I would go to Macaroni Grill, eat two loafs of bread with olive oil, eat my salad, and have them wrap my whole meal up.

Then I would get up from the dinner table, make a U turn head right for the refrigerator for a big honkin' bowl of ice cream. Cookies or brownies if they were around. I love chocolate. After that I would need something salty, so a little Ultimate Butter microwave popcorn, and of course a big cold glass of Pepsi, because it feels so good when it fizzles all the way down, mixing with that salt.

Then maybe just a hand full or seven of dry unsalted raw almonds. Of course that got rid of the salty taste, so I'd eat some pretzels.

Then if I stayed up late enough I would go into the kitchen and fix myself the equivalent of about 5 scrambled eggs using Egg Beaters of course, because I have to watch my cholesterol. HA!

So it was pretty easy to lose weight. No bread, no eating between meals or after dinner.

Slowly the pounds just started falling off. Especially when I started going into the exercise room and turning the treadmill on for 20 minutes! Oh, I didn't walk on it, I just turned it on......... I sat in the middle of the room and watched television. You gotta' watch those treadmills they can give you a heart attack.

No way, I would never take a rifle to a gold field, that is just wrong !

I'll tell you one thing DOC, we were on the club claims down in the Mojave, and we had been hunting for a couple of days, one day this guy came in a pickup truck, and had three teenaged kids with him, he pulled just down from our camp, and then they all pened up,Shotguns rifles handguns, you name it they shot it. They were shoting into a bank, and it was on BLM, not much we could say or do, they wern't shooting in our direction, but this went on all day. needless to say it was very stupid, and like you said right in the middle of a good gold field. Thats one good thing about where Shep and I are hunting, plenty of square nails, and musket balls, but no modern day rounds. Grubstake

Hey Grubstake,

I like the configuration of that coil, and I used it on my smallest test nugget and it sang out crisp and clear--that was impressive. We hunted all day long, saw lots of beautiful scenery, some intriguing mines, and lots of old dry-wash piles.

It was a beautiful day as the weather was perfect, and just a little breeze to cool things down. I just didn't get that coil over any gold.

I'll try it at home in the mountains and let you know how it handles that hot ground up there. The coil only saw three kinds of hotrocks and ignored almost everything else--that's the nice thing about the double D's.

Well, all the best,

Lanny

Doc,

You've sure done a fine job with the pictures. I recognize you, but who's that desert slug next to you at the mine?

I really enjoyed the day, and that one shot in the mine, with the sun coming through from the back, it's a great shot!

The history out in that area is something else. Old workings all over the place: test pits, old shafts and tunnels, all kinds of drywash piles, ancient equipment and building materials--the exact type of historical stuff that gets my prospecting blood pumping.

It just amazes me that anyone could live out there, let alone find enough water to work in that too frequent furnace to try to make wages. I mean, where the heck did they get their water?

The desert is a lonely, yet uniquely beautiful place--one whose riddles I've yet to solve, as far as finding the nuggets goes at least. The beauty I can appreciate, and it haunts me yet--I guess I'll have to give it another shot another time--continue the tradition.

It's a lot of fun getting out and chasing the gold with you Doc. In addition, you're incredibly informative and educated, and a fascinating tour guide.

I hope you had a great birthday, and thanks again for everything. You're the ultimate host.

All the best,

Lanny

Largo,

You old desert sharpshooter--I'll have to chew the fat with you and catch up a bit. Doc and I had a great visit, stirred up the dirt a bit, dug some interesting targets, and got a whomping workout stomping around the desert.

Doc sure looks good in his new, slimmer, trimmer version--my hat's off to him.

Take care,

Lanny

Lanny, I never told you before, but when I was driving truck, my 3rd wife was from Edmonton Alberta, I had a good run up into Alaska and in to yellow knife, then back down into Texas for more pipe and oil Drilling equipment, I met her up at the truckstop in Edmonton, and I always sat in her section, we dated and such for about two years, one time I came rolling in, with a load for Sunco at Ft. Mcmurray, I told her, just pack your stuff, and go with me, and when we get unloaded we will get married and I'll take you to Texas, She did, we were married for 5 years, and at the time we lived in Grandbury Texas. Great contry and people up there. Grubstake

I love that platypus, and its the best coil I have had, but I haven't tried the Wallaby yet. I want to try Sheps out for a day, when we get out again, the rain knocked us out today. Really bad on and off thunder storms. I know at Lethenbridge, there is some good diggings for dinasuars. I guess thats right, Sunco was and is an oil sands operation up at FT McMurray. I hauled alot ofstuff up there for them. Yellowknife was a mining operation up there, but we could only haul it inthe winter, when the lakes were frozen over. Drove long haul for 20 years, and lived a great life doing it. I wouldn't change anything, it was a lifestyle. Grubstake

Looks like you and Lanny had a great time. BTW, Happy belated Birthday!

Dave

ya didn't find any gold or meteorites. I didn't see a beeper in any of those pictures :crylol: Most folks have at least one picture showen a detector to prove they was detecting. :detecting: I think you guys just went on a joy ride and knocked down a couple of suds :beers: At any rate it looks like you had a good time what ever your intentions were.:wiggle:
Been a long time since I seen a couple guys in the desert with their arms around each other .

Geeze Doc, I wouldn't have recogonized you in that pic, as skinny as you look.

Oh well glad to see that you still get out now and then.

Lanny, will be waiting to hear what tales you are willing to tell about your excursion out with Doc.
enjoy and have a good day
