Just got the detector from a friend yesterday, I looked over the manual and tried to set it up, holding different objects in front of the coil like the manual says most of time I can get it to read the correct item but the depth is not close it will be 4-8 even if you put it on the coil.
Ground balance when I adjust the ground balance it does not work like the manual says, as in #4 hold coil 4

Kevin. Get a piece of cardboard about 36 X 36. Put the unit in all metal, scan a spot on the the ground to be sure it is clean, then put a penny, dime, nickle and quarter under different places and cover them with the cardboard. Switch to Disc. Practice listening to the sounds and adjusting your unit. I have a Sharpshooter II and usually set my sensitivity at 12:00 and my discrimination around 11:00. Use that as a possible starting position, I usually run in Disc and switch back and forth between All metal to pinpoint an object before digging. Yours may be a little different, but it is a good place to start and once you feel comfortable, go try it out in your back yard. You might be surprized what comes up. By the way, Headphones help. It saves batteries and blocks out outside interference from passing cars, people, etc.

This is another reason why I stopped using the Land Star....Too many buttons to push just to ground balance it...My White's is much easier to work with...
