Land Star?

I have a chance to pick one of these up. Is the Land Star a pretty decent machine? What is a good used one worth? Thanks for any info.

in my book anyway. i started out with this model, Radio Shack version. Keep in mind there are 2 versions of the landstar. they changed the electronics about 2004 or somewhere around this time. the older model I.D.'S in all metal mode and in my opinion has the better no motion all metal mode. But, it seems the newer version has better disc modes and a little deeper in these modes. Let me tell you, even though they look alike, from the moment you turn them on, you can tell differences. when you turn the older model on, it will have 3 slow tones. the newer model will have 4 very fast sounding tones. good machines, not very good target separation, decent depth. you can rachet the pinpoint , etc., etc.,
i have found alot with 'em. I saw one for sale recently for $110 shipped , pretty good deal. the 4 and 10 inch coils work great with it.

good luck on deciding and happy hunting ,

Tim

Thanks for the feedback. I just made a deal for this one and should have it next week. Am used to Tesoros with one tone and no ID so it will take a bit of getting used to.

All metal mode with target ID, ability to "rachet down" to pinpoint, great machine that you will be happy with at the price you paid :)

At the price i paid? I never said what i paid. I did just make a deal for a 4" coil for it too. But mine doesn't ID in all metal mode. Darn.

The price the seller advertised was a great deal in my book, so that was where my opinion was based on. Well woth the money. I paid over 250.00 on clearance at a radio shack 10 years ago. Good luck with it and HH

Ok, Well then i guess i got a better deal then as i got it for $90 shipped. So far i like it. The depth always seems to be off, but the ID is usually pretty good. I like it better than that obnoxious bell ringing Ace 250.

I got my Radio Shack version of the Landstar off of eBay for $102.00. It's like brand new.

I must have an oddball software version as mine starts with the fast beeps and target I.D. still works in all metal mode.
I find that I lose quite a bit of depth when hunting in disc or notch modes.
Also the target I.D. Is hit and miss on targets deeper than 6".

All metal mode will sense targets surprisingly deep and pinpointing in all metal mode is spot on.

When I am not in an area where I am anticipating a lot of deep targets I hunt in auto notch mode.
This allows me to disc out iron but still get all of the nickels.

When I am in an older area looking for silver that could be deep, I hunt in all metal mode, turn the sensitivity as high as possible without getting a ton of falsing, fine tune the ground balance and reset things with the ground track button often. I also swing low and slow.

I trust the target ID down to about 6". Any coin sized hits deeper than 6" I dig, even if it ID's as iron.

All in all, I really love this machine! I just bought a 4" coil for it and I can't wait to give it a try.

Thanks,
Ken L

Mine starts up in Disc too. Yours ID's deeper that mine does. Mine is good to about 4" but i dig most all good solid repeatable signals. I have a 4" coil too that i haven't tried out yet but in air tests it does good for depth.
