Lake Michigan Merc!

Big North wind driving a longshore rip today...I got into some targets with the Pro...the 34 merc and a few wheats got spit up right on the black sand slope! This black sand is really something, even a coin on the surface gives off a bad signal...sometimes all you hear is a tiny 'tic' but you know theres a target in there someplace...No gold again today...not for lack of effort and plenty of targets...Spent 3hrs...heres a cool shot of the difference from Apr 2 to today at the same log...it got flipped around even...and the rip really took off a lot more sand as you can see..[attachment 312235 apr2715.jpg][attachment 312236 Apr2-15-1.jpg]
I worked it for Old Glory...a guy should try to stay out in it on a day like this!...got work to do...:sadwalk: This shoreline changes so fast, nearly constantly, so a guy has to go every day and check it out..

Hey bud, you did some digging and an oldie silver to boot. Conditions look a little tough. HH jim tn

Mud you're doing great! You got me wanting to do some beach detecting. Dirt fishing gets hard around here in the Summertime.

WTG on the mercury dime and looks like more clad and some spoons. Glad you got out, Mud, It might not make a difference in your bank account, but it sure does the head good to get out. That mercury dime looks great.

Silver lying on top of the ground is getting old. How about diggin' some like the rest of us  Way to go Mud!! Looks like your having yourself a blast! Way to go on the Merc and load of clad! Keep it coming. - Jim

Look at all that black sand ! Seems like there should be a little flour gold mixed in with that. Im gonna get over there and try panning some of it one of these days.

Way to go, Muddy P! You're on a roll! That's a cool looking spot. I understand how the sand gets swept away by currents, but how does it come back? The same way...currents? I'm very intrigued by erosion, lol. You should see what I've done to my mind! Anyway, what I mean is, that first pic shows a tall bank. The second shows it nearly gone....will there be another there some day, or is all that sand lost to Davey Jones' Locker, just slowly silting in? I'd like to see your big old lake some day.

They say theres a 7 year 'tide' on Lake Michigan. The water level fluctuates and the beaches come and go...This year is very abnormal, the water level came up nearly 2' in one year and is blowing out all the beaches that were here..on the webcams, you can watch the Bulldozers replenishing all the really great old cuts in primo spots getting ready for the Summer beach crowd...!. We found some old gold out in the Lake when the water was down, now we would be over our head in those spots..:sadwalk: No matter, look at these blowouts!

The drop offs and cuts change very fast on this water, sometimes you only have a 6hr window to get in and out before it sands back in 4' or more...so theres old gold/silver that only gets exposed maybe once in 50yrs..and then maybe for 6hrs...if you are into erosion and sand movement, you should come up and take a look! You can stay here at my place if you make the drive!

As far as flour gold OhioChris, there just may be some, I've got pans and whatnot from my days in South Dakota, and some mornings when the Sun hits that black sand right, it looks red on account of the ground up garnets...as you know black sand and garnets mean gold to a panner... Theres a lot of other gold here though, this is a tough place to work for it for the reasons stated above.very few perfect days to get it, and a whole lot of realestate to cover.... C'mon up! Camp out at my crib! Its not that far of a drive for you...

I would absolutely LOVE to come up there! And thanks for your kind hospitality, but I'm on a pretty strict budget for a few more years. Then, who knows?
