Lady Liberty 100th Silver

RONC(OR)

New member
Went on a road trip today with Richard We went to were we left off the day before. My first good dig was the 1899 Barber Quarter this was my 100th silver of the year. Not 4' away I get another hit 6-7" deep sounds sweet so I go slow and give it room out pops a sweet 1917 s Variety 1 SLQ I was on cloud 9 We took a brake and had lunch and went back for round 2 . The first target I dug was a 48 quarter Trifecta ! .then I dug 1911 V nickle followed by a 43 Merc. when we got there I step out of the car and found the watch right in the road still running and keeping good time . I also found this Harmonica plate it seems to be made of lead sure is heavy I have never seen one like it. I did not dig a single wheat . I would be interested in what some of you guys and gals think the grade of the SLQ is . It was a great 4th of July for me hope it was for everybody thx for looking HH

G-4 GOOD - Date and lettering legible. Top of date worn. Liberty's right leg and toes worn off. Much wear evident on left leg and drapery lines.

Still a nice find, Ron. S mintmark sure helps it out.

I think I've only found 4 or 5 SLQ's and only one has a date. It's hard to find one that grades high.

Never found a naughty lady before; hope to some day.

What's a "naughty lady???"

The 1917 SLQ has 2 varities. On variety 1, Lady Liberty has her right breast exposed. (A bit naughty, don't you think?) Well the general public didn't think that it was very lady-like for her to be exposing her breast. Therefore, the mint came out with a redesigned variety 2 where her breast is covered. It stays covered throughout the remainer of the SLQ series.

Me personally....well, I like Variety 1 of course.

Thanks SS! Appreciate the color on that! I guess the Victorian attitude still previaled - personally I favor the exposed breast! Like ur avatar......what Western character is that? I'm a big western fan!

You had a great day Ron and CONGRATULATIONS
on the fine selection of silvers. The SLQ is still the
most elegant of the coins in my opinion. Bare brested or
not she's still a perty lady. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Erik,

That's a stock avatar from another forum.

Don't think it represents anyone in particular.

Funny thing is I was working in Kansas last year and drove over to Dodge City. There on a billboard on the East side of town was the same image advertising some product. It's the only other place I've seen it.
