Labor Day weekend hunts ..

I hit an old park on saturday and managed a few wheats and some relics. Today I went back to the resort that has been so kind this year. And was rewarded with one more silver dime and five more wheats. But, I'm going to let this holiest of hunting spots heal for the rest of the year and focus on this 100 year old park that I have not witnessed a single silver coin come out of. Man ...detecting time is running out. I don't know about some of you, but I can say for sure that I might have two months of hunting left before it snows or freezes.

Hope everyone had a nice holiday !

Nice hunt Dave...and congrats on adding one more silver to the tally.

101 degrees and no shirt on Saturday....then 61 degrees today and a jacket. The weather is changing...and in a hurry.

Nice park  looks like it could have played host to some serious picnics. Congrats on another fine silver :beers:

Very true it wont be long before we have to put the detectors away for a the winter. get all you can now, thats one coin that wont spend another winter in the ground. nice job MC. DAVE.:clapping:

Looks like a killer location with all those trees and the interesting finds. Are you finding much fill? Just ask because a good many of those trees dont look old. Hit some of the locations you wouldnt. With the cold coming you can get into some of the spots that others didnt or couldnt during the summer. Good luck on the silver.

Dew, this 40 acre park was opened in 1911. And I have hit it from just about every angle over the last two years. I keep telling myself that it cannot possibly be hunted out, but I am starting to believe it. I am not seeing any newer-looking fill when I cut plugs either. One thing I have considered, is that this town is completely surrounded by iron ore mines, and that maybe they used some of the tailings to fill-in some low spots. It could be that my Explorer can't see deep enough to get the older coins? Maybe a PI detector would fare better? On a positive note I am starting to find wheats and some nickels from the 50's in a spot I had'nt tried until this year, so maybe it has'nt been detected as hard as I thought. It's a big place and there are so many places to look. Hopefully I can scare some silver up this year before winter arrives.

Always felt Spring and Fall were the best so make the best of it before the snow falls..Now if it will just stop raining......

I feel perhaps small yards can be hunted out but not large parks or areas although the pickings can be small.

Last year hit the front lawn of which is now a school but dates back to the turn of the century as an amusement park and scored a Barber Half and dime from the late 1800's and of all things a 50's franklin half and guesstimate thousands of detectors have gone over that field in the last 20 years to prove my point.

This year produced a dozen wheaties so perhaps its hunted out but know their is just one nice silver left so will be back next year... for some more pounding where the pickings are slim...

Hey Dave --

Nice job!

Funny thing, I have a 120-year old, 17-acre park in my town, which I have hunted quite a bit. Similar story -- I have never pulled, nor have seen pulled -- a single silver coin from this park. I have nabbed a handful of wheats, and a couple of nice rings, but not a single silver. I, like you, have a hard time believing this park is totally hunted out, but it sure acts like it is! I sure do wish guys like Bryce, who love to hit that type of park and excel at pulling out the goodies that others have missed, would come down here and show me how it's done. When the snow starts to fly up your way, and the ground freezes, there is an open invitation for you to come down to Oklahoma and help me find the silver coin hiding amongst the trash and clad at this park! (Bryce -- you too, wanna join us?!)

Hello Dave

We must be close. I am in Hibbing for work through the end of Oct. And I know what you mean about ther not being not much time left. Trying to make the best of it while it lasts

Yes, very close. Hibbing is only 45 minutes south of here. What kind of work are you doing? Mine-related?

I fly one of the yellow CL-215s the state owns fighting forest fires

Are you working on those fires in the Ely area. Or is it on the north shore ... can't remember. Those planes are unreal ... swooping down to scoop water out of area lakes and dumping it on fires. That has to be slightly nerve-wracking. Did you bring a detector up here with you?

We are on standby for the Ely fire, but I think they have it pretty well under control. I do, I have my explorer and my excalibur up here with me

That is good news as far as the fire is concerned. Have you had a chance to get out and do some detecting? I will be hitting a certain park at some point this weekend and you are welcome to join me. It's only 30 minutes from Hibbing. Let me know if you are interested.
