Kudos to Minelab Engineers - CTX 3030

Hi,

Put my new CTX 3030 together last night. No, I have not used it yet. I decided just holding and looking at it that a post was deserved.

I am just guessing here but the CTX probably represents one of the largest investments in engineering and tooling we have seen in a consumer detector. The thing is basically new from the ground up. Forget the electronics I am just talking about the basic hardware involved. The unit really has to be seen and held to be appreciated. It was a pleasure just putting it together.

You see one of those movies where the hit man takes the hi-tech rifle parts out of the case and puts it together? Slide, twist, click, snick? That is kind of what it felt like putting the CTX together. Talk about coin shooting.

Obviously a lot of work goes into designing new detectors, but the majority take existing designs and tweak. Or maybe new electronics but existing boxes, coils, etc. It is rare that we get a totally new platform. And the CTX is as new as new can be - it really is 21st century technology.

Anyway, I am impressed with what Minelab obviously invested in developing the CTX 3030. The ante is getting upped as to what it is going to take to compete in the metal detector world. There are only a few companies that have the resources to bring something like this to market.

Good work guys. Congratulations!

I agree Steve. The balance and build are impeccable. But if you think it feels good holding it.......just wait til' you get a good grasp on some of the new functionality. I think you'll agree with the overwhelming majority of folks who have taken the time to understand and apply this functionality, the CTX 3030 has the potential to take this hobby to a whole new level. The only engineering they forgot, was the abilty to use my X-1... man I miss her! The Garrett is decent, but surely not an X-1.

Steve, I agree with you most of the platform is new and they did quite a nice job on the engineering. See my post "First Impression of the CTX".

MCB, I agree with you 100%, I have become quite dependent on the X-1 even with it's blemishes and all (hate that little switch box).

The software is better, but not the quantum leap I expected to see given the major engineering of the unit. Hopefully Minelab will read our comments and improve the software, but I skeptical that we will see major functionality enhancements. They should have outsourced the software engineering to Apple, then we'd have some "real" software. Regardless, I ponied up the money and own a CTX and I hope to really like it. Minelab absolutely needs to market a wireless X-1 clone for this machine....without this accessory I feel like I'm detecting blind and may be forced to go back to the SE Pro/eTrac. I think people here need to petition ML directly about this issue.

right down to the nice tight package it folds into for travel, the coil turns 90 degrees and slips into a lock in the shaft putting the coil into a position that will allow the entire unit to lie on it's side,,,,,
