Knob basics

Fill me in on the knobs - I have a random collection of kinda junk parts to make an excal II. I have 4 knobs with metal insert and set screw and a 5th that is all plastic with a top nut tightener. Why different knobs and what works best?

many buy the Anderson knobs that change out the originals. I personally dont like the small standard knobs. They are very tight to move and fragile..... so much so that some buy a knob guard. I like a bit larger knob.... they move smoother, dont break and i can move them with two fingers and FEEL the stop. I think a lot of the switches get broken just because they are tight and you find yourself putting pressure on those switch stops....... which break easily. If you get an after market knob many have brass inserts and set screws. Swap out the brass set screw for stainless. Otherwise if you dont remove them occasionally they can oxidize and freeze up on you. Get the set screws with allen wrench heads. Never broken an after market knob nor switch ..... but i did with the standard knobs, i broke both. Soooo i never use the knob guard now either.

Anderson knobs include stainless grub screws, instructions, and installation tool...

There ya go..... Pete sells some really superior products. True Value sells the set screws here. By the way glad to see Pete following the forums.

All of the Anderson stuff is top notch. Have a lot of there stuff. The stock Minelab knobs break easily and often. One thing to remember with the Excal is fresh water wash down after every hunt. A lot of fresh water. Take it apart often. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

I use the standard KNOBS and have just moulded replacement for the blue collets that never seem to last.

Like to stay away from all dissimilar metals when involved with salt water.

I use the bigger knobs from Radio Shack and they work great but here in Texas they have gone out of business, at least in my town they have so I bought several more so I can have them, have had these on my Excal II for 2 years and they work great, I take them off twice/year, clean them, re-lube my O rings and have never had any problems.....HH
