I dug this penny yesterday looks like a steel wheat cent???but looks like it may just be painted???
 
A steel cent is magnetic. If it doesn't stick to a magnet, is not made of steel. Like Chris, I have found a steel cent but it was extremely rusty. The only reason I knew what it was is because it was in a pocket spill of old copper pennies.
