Kind of an odd question for you X-Terra users.....

As most of you know, I like to hunt in the all metal mode and listen to the tones. Although I "ignore" the low tones, hearing them helps me sort out the adjacent targets. I wear a 7 3/4 sized cap and find that most headphones are too tight to be comfortable for long hours of use. I started using Gray Ghosts a few years ago and they fit perfectly. However, this past weekend I was hunting and it was HOT. My ears were sweating and I hate it when that happens. I took off the Gray Ghosts and put on a cheap set of those Garret Ace headphones. You know, the ones that don't fully cover your ears. Although they couldn't block out the nearby traffic noise, they were a lot cooler to wear. But, I also noticed that the low tones were much lower in pitch, more distinct and just plain pleasant to listen to compared to my Gray Ghosts. I was wondering if any of you who listen to the low tones could recommend a pair of headphones that would block out the noise, reproduce the low sounds with quality bass sounds, and fit a huge mellon! My Koss 30's are'nt bad. But they are hinged at the earcups and flop around too much for my liking. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks HH Randy

Rick (N.D.) use them and we both are hard of hearing. I also use my Timberwolfs on some of my other machines. 90% of the time I use the Shadow phones. I also use Radio Shack Wireless phones and they work excellent on all my detectors. I liked the Radio Shack ones so good I bought 2 sets of them. The Stock # is 33-1253 and they are for I pods. Get a 6" extention stero to stero 1/8" jacks (small ones) I use a mono 1/4" to 1/8" (small end) and I have a stero 1/4" to 1/8" jack that you plug into the detectors. Anyway you can figuar it out . Just plug in the TX and velcro it to the detector run the 6" cable up tp the headphone jack. They have internal nimh batteries and last about 7 hours. anyway that is what I use and I have had every phone possible over the years. They work for me. Later bud Jerry aka Tinfoil.

I used a pair of Whites Pro headphones a number of years ago and thought they had the best sound/sounds I had ever heard. I dont think you can get that particular set any more though. I tried but was told they stopped making them. Audio Telex make an under the chin stethoscope(did I spell that right) type which are up around, if im correct, 500 to 600 ohms. A lot of PI users here in Oz swear by them. Personally I have never liked the sound Telex produces but thats just me. Too screamy, loud in your face sound, or ears I should say. I like my cheapo RPGs, but again might be just me. I have seen too old Tank (army) headphones rigged up for detecting which were around 2000 ohms, they blow my ears to bits but some guys, must be half deaf, love them.

G'day Digger how's things? Mate its a funny thing you know, when just the other day I tried out an ear plug setup with a stereo connection. On the wire is a sound regulator which comes in very handy for turning the sound up or down without having to go into the menu setup on the X-terra 70. Now playing music through these phones sound absolutely amazing and the clarity I get through the 70 is spot on for me. They weigh nothing and fit inside your ear so you dont have to turn them all the way up. They will keep your ears cool as they are not covered and as far as blocking out the surrounding noise goes well by turning the sound up will help. You can get cheap pairs but I recommend a decent pair with a gold plated jack.
Cheers!

I have been using a pair of AccuSound from Koss for 3 years now. I sweat a lot, but never around the ears with those. I don't get super-low bass from them, but maybe phones made for a stereo would. I hunt mostly in the woods and these AccuSounds have held up very well. I always wanted to try the Grey Ghosts though. Ron

Hi Guys,
I normally use my koss ur-30 on my 70 but i just made up a small speaker using a telephone speaker in a small plastic box with the curley lead off the red headphones off a excalibur they were the phones also that were on the early sd. I find that working park areas in close to the city it is safer to hear what is going on around you. One park i was in the other week a guy had been murdered a couple of weeks before he was stabbed to death. So with me working on my lonesome you have to be on the ball.

I use the Troy headphones, but I took off the old ear cups and made some donut shaped cups out of good plastic foam and glued them on with hot glue. They are about 3/4 " deep and large enough inside to fit over your ears. They are cool and will not flatten your ears after a long day. When they start to wear out, pull them off and make a new set.

I know it sounds crazy, but I use a set I got for going to the NASCAR races. The are from R E Electronics. I also use a signal booster which allows me to keep the volume down and get clear signals. It also makes my batteries last longer. I f it sounds like some thing you might be interested in I'll get the model number for you.

Dirt Dobber,

I have been using the Koss QZ-99's which also are suitable for scanners at the races. They have nice big deep ear cups and don't pinch my head like other phones I have tried.

Please let me know the model number or a website where I can check them out.

TIA
Tom

I use Telex under chin phones 99% of the time on my land detectors, I purchased them in 1983 and they are still going strong only replaced the tube which I broke in two the electronic`s are still original.
My phono`s I use in high wind or other high noise times are home made from old telephone speakers fitted into ear muffs these have got real kick I had to clip them so I didn`t go deaf LOL they are STC brand I was told that only certain models will work? but the noise has to be real bad for me to take off my Telex.

Yeah. I put the ear buds that came with my MP3 player onto my Ace 250 (the ear buds didn't have a volume control) and when I went over my first target, I literally dropped the Ace, because the sound was SO loud. It just about blow my eardrums apart!:stretcher:
On the X-Terra with a volume control; that would be a different matter. Make sure that the volume is WAY down BEFORE you connect them though, or you may be in for a very rude shock!

Sweaty ears is annoying and also a recipe for trouble in my case, Digger. I've contracted bad ear infections caused by headphones not permitting air flow to the ear canals; thus bacteria builds and infection sets in.

My solution is a set of Killer B Stingers, with one headphone only. Sound quality is great and I just change periodically from ear to ear, avoiding perspiration build up.

And, I like having the uncovered ear listening to what's going on around me, too.
