Kill pulltabs and Detect Rings? Sure

The display area for accepting and rejecting targets can be visualized as a square of dots. The dots are 31 vertical and 31 horizontal for a total 961 dots. A dime when detected is indicated by a square of 10 dots by 10 dots. In edit how many of those dots can I eliminate and still detect the dime?
This seems of no value other unless we think of a ring and pulltab. If we hear the same tone for both is that because there is no difference or we cannot tell the difference? Are the pulltab and ring indicated by the same 10 dots? If I set the detector to lean a pulltab and then eliminate as only as many dots as I can to reject the pulltab is there a dot matrix were I will detect the ring or at that number of dots is both the ring and pulltab rejected? I have tested this both in the field and in my shop and there is a dot matrix that will reject a pulltab and still detect a ring. It is not 100% but is very good to the point that I can be post pulltabs. If I further consider that a pulltab is much lighter than most rings that that can be included for even more rejection. I have illustrated some patterns you might like to play with and also develop this idea further. Notice I have rejected the upper left but this is not necessary.

Great, these long cold days sure get less so if we can think and read about our detectors. Being retired and also shut in by the cold is a good time to bone up on the detector. It is not as good as being in the field but those great days are just ahead of us.

many people doubt it's ability and will not try things like this.................whether it be dimes, pennies, silver rings................whatever
it does work and works great
i personnally do not use this exactly as u have it, but have tested similar on the beach where i hunt. i am not bothered by pull tabs in the damp sand all that bad, but up in the dry................boy...........
the exp II can really make detecting fun and quite productive and still leave nice targets for the guys with P I's........... <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":("> bad max <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">
one has to be careful and always test their set ups after rejecting and accepting, can get tricky
Kill pulltabs and Detect Rings? Sure - I like it Cody

You are right on in that you have to fine tune the target in the soil. Once you get in the general matrix for a tab and ring it is easy to do. Then save the pattern and combine it with a screen when in an area where there are a lot of tabs. The ring finds start to go up pretty good.
With the screen pattern in S1 that has a duplicate iorn mask at -15 it is easy to add rejection of the learned pulltabs and stay in ferrous tones. Very nice way to detect if tabs are a problem. You also get the extra screen data on the SmartScreen. It is then easy to switch to an iron mask of -16 or to digital depending on what is at the site. Other learned targets can be stored in the other S slots to combine or eliminate from the pattern.
It looks like it may be warm enough to get out on Friday so will get some hunting in.
Have a good one,

Even when I hunted with a Sov. I left the meter home as I dug all on beaches..I feel Cody, Andy Sabisch or even Mitch a local fellow with his Treasureport site has some good ideas..Just an impossibility to 100 percent reject junk which mimics gold rings and get the gold rings as gold rings come in many sizes, kts, mixtures etc although one can surely cut down the odds especially if one or two tabs is prevalent in your hunting area.I just prefer to hear all the non ferrous and if I get a solid hit in the gold ring area I go for it..Example my wifes white gold engagement ring and a beavertail and my wifes yellow gold mothers ring and certain tabs will hit exactly the same place on various meters I have tried. I always said weigh a gold ring and the tab or foil that mimics it will weigh much less so indeed its possible for a gold ring to sound different to a trained ear.Who said this hobby was easy????. One more thing I really feel any major rejection in the non-ferrous area may just cost you some depth and absolutely -16 iron mask although noisy may add depth.Just my lowly opinions and feel the above people mentioned indeed have some good ideas..

In the learn mode we can detect a deep coin that will indicate as only one dot. This is why we need to edit the patterns. A coin in the air will indicate a 10 by 10 matrix but the deep coin in the soil only a single dot. What this means is we have 961 notches. We can do wonders with the discrimination capabilities of the Explorer.
<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">961 nothces is a huge level of discrimination!</span>
