Kids @ what age to turn on to dirt fishing?

Herb Jones

New member
I was thinking of altering a compadre (Shortening it) and letting my nephew get into detecting. He's 6, @ what age have you all turned newbies into little treasure hunters?

I personally don't believe kids at that age should be allowed say in a park to detect and dig. Detect maybe but not dig.

On a beach though, i see no issue.

Hey there Herb,
When my grand-daughter was 6 I picked her up a Prizm 2 new for $50.00.
We have gotten out a few times and she likes it alot. I don't take my
detector with and she does the swing'n. Naturally I'm not going to let
her use a leshe digger to dig but use a White's poly digger. I taught her
to dig a small 3/4 plug and fold it over. She knows to try and make it
look like we were never there. She does fine. It's all about teaching
ETHICS of the hobby. She's now going on 8 years old and we can do an
hour hunt easily. Some kids don't have a long attention span but if there's
an interest there the rest will follow as I said it's all about TEACHING ETHICS
of this great hobby. Hope this helps...

I would say either they have it in their blood or not.

If it was like me, I just moved in that direction with no influence.

I kind of had a hard start with money being limited and getting several detectors under $100 and none worked to the point that I was hooked. I hooked up with my dad after several years of him going his way and me going my way. He showed me a White's 5000D that he used and I could see that was what I wanted. I took it from there and I was off.

So just give them a hint and see how it goes.

Looking at my 5 grandkids I see that every child is different. Some have a very short attention span unless they are looking at some type of computer screen. Others quickly learn to love being outdoors doing something. None of my Grandchildren have any interest in detecting. Even though the father of three of them detects.

Until the child had had the opportunity to get out and detect and spend time with you there is no way to know if they will catch the bug that drives us to go out and dig in the dirt.
