Kids Detector

So it has been years since i've had my Minelab E2 out in the field. Starting a family has a funny way of doing that to your hobby time. In any event my son will be turning 7 in May and seems to have an interest in my old finds and going with me in the spring. This got me thinking that, assuming he has an interest after going with me in the spring, are there detectors small enough for kids his age and do any of you have advice on any specific brands/models?

Thanks for the help!

Two come to mind right off - Tesoro Compadre for a "beep and dig" simple detector or, if a display is desired, the Garrett Ace 250. Neither will break the bank and are capable enough for back up or loaners as well.

Thanks for the ideas. Guess i should consider weight as well when thinking of something for little people. Either of the two you mentioned heavier than the other?

Hi,
I started off with a Radio Shack detector in the 70s.
It came as a kit or completely assembled and was basically the only thing affordable back then to a youngster whose only income was allowance and mowing lawns around the neighborhood.
I actually detected lots of stuff with it.
Chinese copies of it are very affordable nowadays and ebay is full of them.
Good luck

Whose father sadly did not share the hobby.

Compadre is 2.2 lbs and Ace 250 is 2.7 lbs. Compadre comes with a lifetime warranty!

Another vote for the Tesoro Compadre. New about $160, used $120.

After doing some comparison shopping i was also wondering about the Fisher F2? It is listed as 2lbs and comes with many bells and whistles for the price of $199. Any thoughts on this one for a beginner/child? Thanks again for the great feedback!

Tesoro Compadre. It's lightweight and easy to use. For the beginner, just crank up the discrimination and turn him loose.

It's one detector that I always plan on keeping. The Compadre is not a toy (beginner detector), but it works great for a beginner.

I believe the f2 is actually 2.6lbs with the batteries.Seems to get good reviews and like you say has a few bells and whistles including notching which could be useful in certain circumstances.I believe there is also a few different coil choices including the 11" dd coil which would be good in mineralised ground.Another decent choice.....either the f2 or compadre would serve you well.

I also say Compadre. $160.00. 2.2 lbs. 1 -9 volt battery,..1 knob, And a nail pouch with digger. Add a little boy and your ready to have fun. KEN

I say garret ace 250 because kids like to have a meter. It makes them feel like they are big.
