Key West water detecting

New member
I plan on doing some water detecting for a week in Key West,Florida in January. Would appreciate any tips or recommendations from anyone who has previously had any luck down there. It appears that Higgs, Smathers, Dog, and Rest beaches are free and have free parking. Super site and a great forum for someone addicted to this great hobby.

Hi Ken. Thanks for responding even though you had no advice. I was really was hoping to get some feedback on detecting the Key West beaches. Maybe it is not allowed? Hopefully, someone will get back to me.
I've been detecting since 1981 and mostly do water to chest high now. Lived the past two years in NC and only got six gold rings in the water, 14 silver rings/items and about $165 in change. Ct. and surrounding states were better - usually got about 50 pieces of gold/year (about 300 hours of detecting time).
Remember....you can't get anything sitting at home !

Hi Bob, What ever you do ,do not wear anything shiney in the water in the keys. There is a lot of Barrucudas there big one and little one ,they all bite. Hunt slow . If you see one near you don't try to scair it away . wear a wet suit if you have one, just br carefull.they are a bad fish to mess with.I live a 100 mile north of the keys ,in Naples and we have the 5 to 6 footers here ! We had a girl here with a shiney bathing suit on ,she got hit 19 times before she got out of the water. So shiney is bad, black and slow is good. So have fun watch out for the big Fish , Happy Huntting .

Quite a few years ago I hunted Smathers beach, in the water late at night to avoid the crowds, it was the last of Dec.and the beach was full during the day. I hunted early a couple of morning and none of the employees ever bothered me. they just kept cleaning the beach, so I am guessing it was OK to hunt. Fort Zachery is a historic site no hunting there beach, but it was a beautiful beach to spend the day at allot of shade and you can walk thru the Fort. Make sure you go to Mallory park at sunset to watch all the free shows, some really cool people. If you like to have a drink, don't miss Captain Tony's, not kid friendly. Good luck and enjoy. HH

HI BEACHMOLE,BEEN LOOKING AT THIS SITE FOR SOME TIME. I HUNTED KEYWEST FOR SIX YEARS,GREAT TIME GREAT GOODS,SMATHERS HIT THE SAND TRAILS,GO OUT PAST NAV.MARKERS.A FLOATING BAR WAS IN CHEST DEEP WATER,HIT ALSO BY THE JETTIES.REST BEACH WAS A CEMETERY,IT WASHED OUT IN 1846,IT WAS FOR NATIVE AMERICANS AND SLAVES.BEST FINDS CAN BE FOUND AT THE CASA MARINA,GOOD LUCK,I WOULD LIKE TO BE THERE ALSO,PAPA-JOE HOOKED ME UP WITH THIS SITE,THANKS PAPA-JOE.:goodnight::jump:

Scoop-dog....thanks for the info. I looked up Casa Marina and it mentioned it had the largest private beach on key west. Did you detect the water and dry sand in front of Casa or just the water. It appears right next to Higgs beach.
Also, what time of day or night did you do your detecting?
Thanks again.
