Hi all!
Went to a park in a nearby city that I've hunted many times before with quite a few decent finds. Just got started and got one of "those" signals that we Minelab users know as being two objects in the same hole, and one sounded pretty darn good!
Pinpointed at 6+", so I cut a plug about that depth- nothing yet. In went my X1 Probe and what happened was I was getting a null, with a faint high pitch in the distance. I cut the hole deeper and when I pulled out the dirt and checked it over the coil- there was the null. Checked it a couple of times- yup- in my hands. So I tossed it in my bucket and found the rusted piece of iron junk. Well, I hoped something else was in there, so in went the X1 and there was the scream- YEAH!
Dug out another handful of dirt and I saw it. There was the big silver edge and when I shook off the dirt, I could see it was a Barber half. Psyched because, although I've found loads of silver with my XS, this was my first half dollar. Bummed because I could see I hit it with my digger getting that piece of rust out of the hole.
Date was an 1897, in pretty worn condition, and I knew the O & S mints of this date are pretty key, so I hoped to find a mintmark on the back. Turned it over- very, very worn, but there it was- an S. Only a little more than 930,000 minted- worth $150 in G4. This one doesn't measure up, but still- I'm very happy nonetheless.
Snowing here in Mass and maybe more more Tuesday- DAMN!
