kepping sand out of coil cover on excal II

So I emptied the coil cover of sand for the first time over the weekend. I noticed how delicate that coil looked on the bottom. Is there any way to keep the sand out permanently? I heard truck bed liner works or something. Anyway. HH. -Joe

i just cleaned my cover it was full of sand , I have thought of just leaving it off

I am thinking of a dip of some sort. Id never hunt without the cover...that coil would have a hole in it in ten minutes. HH -Joe

My Excal II falsed alot even though I emptied the coil cover often each hunt. I kept it off one day and the falsing issues went away instantly like magic. It's not ever going back on.

This topic was on here recently and one of the solutions was to use the coil without the cover after spraying with pickup truck bed-liner coating, which someone said I believe voids the warranty on a new machine. Check with your dealer is probably a good idea. Another solution was to use rtv silicone around the top edge of the coil cover. I used Permatex Ultra Black purchased at a local auto parts store in a 3 oz. tube. I don't believe this would void your warranty on a new Excalibur.IMO

Coil covers in the surf just plain suck. I throw them in the trash on my never ending quest to rid the world of them. Go to PEP Boys and get some bed liner spray. A couple of coats is good enough. Touch up as needed. Your coil will either work from the factory or not. It will not void the warranty of the main tube. At the very most you will have to pay for a new coil if something was to go wrong with yours. And that just isn't likely. You could fill the cover with silicone and press it on the coil. But I really don't see Minelab liking that option any better. The bed liner spray will last you at least 4 or five hunts, and that is if you scrub a lot. One small touch up and you are good again. No Falsing.

I don't see a big deal. Perhaps a minute to pop off the coil cover and rinse off in the water. I typically do it once per hunt.

Apply a bead of clear silicone caulking around the coil cover, on both sides of the loop. My coil cover has not been off in 7 years and no sand gets inside. All of my detectors have the coil covers siliconed in place, even my land machines from the day they are purchased.

Tony - In my particular case it actually was a big deal. Even in ankle deep surf I would have to clean it every few minutes. It falsed that bad and often. Maybe my coil cover was defective or my unit was a bit sensitive. It didn't even matter were I set my sensitivity. Without the coil cover, no problems at all. Go figure.

If you are hunting in the wave breaks it doesn't take long to get crap in the cover. Seal it up or remove it and use bed liner spray. The first time I used my coil with out the cover I wished I had done it so much earlier. I actually watched my SEF cover get pulled off and drawn out to sea. That was the last cover I ever had at the beach. Taking the covers off and putting them back on loosens them up. Especially if you crack it. No big deal to throw them in the trash either. What ever works best for you.

Interesting. Was there any pattern to the beaches / water that caused the falsing with the coil cover on or was it everywhere?

Once the coil had sand trapped in it, it falsed everywhere, even moving out of the surf into the wet sand. I was getting ready to send it back to Minelab for a repair until I removed the cover. Not a single falsing issue since (hope I didn't just jinx myself). Actually, I've been out with it quite a few times since, so I'm convinced that was the problem in my case.

sounds like a lemon to me. mho.

thanks for advice all. im thinkin truck bed liner it is. either that or a dip in some silicone or epoxy. for now ill just deal with cover. till i check on warranty an stuff. anyway. hh -joe

I have tried the GT cover on the Excalibur and it fits better. I don't know why but it gets less sand. I figure I am on the beach and there's the ocean I just stop after the first 2/3 hrs and rinse both off and start again if It takes three times a hunt no big deal!

in 10 years of beach hunting iv never removed a coil cover? mabe my East coast sand is diff? but i never have a problem with it..Excal's, Sovereign's,CZ20/21,Tiger Shark...all work great.

Use spray on liner. Do NOT go without a cover water hunting unless you use liner or marine epoxy! A friend wore a hole in his coil real quick without a coil cover. Had to give it about 8 or 9 coats of liner to seal things. Make sure each coat sets up real hard before the next or it will never get hard and hold up well. 2 hours between coats in the sun at least.

Any harm to running with no cover and no coating? How durable is the coil bottom without a cover etc. on it? I too rub mine against the sand pretty regular. Its hard not to when you're wading and the visability isn't that great....

See my message above. We hunt fresh water and he wore his out real fast with nothing protecting the coil.
