Kellyco & Tesoro - Good ?

 I was reading stuff on another forum today about the team up of Tesoro and Kellyco. No one on there had anything good to say about it. As a matter of fact several dealers (including mine) have stopped handling Tesoros because they did not like this move. I would like to know your opinion on this. Please keep it clean and please don't call me a "can of worms" opener or a "pot stirrer" because I am only interested in your opinions and not sarcasm. Thanks and hope the cooler weather brings you out in the field more often. RDF :tesoro::detecting:

Like it or not, the internet has changed the way we shop and buy things. Local brick and mortar stores are disappearing at an alarming rate. It is just too hard for them to compete with big internet dealers or small internet dealers operating out of their house with no overhead. Think of the overhead for a small brick and mortar store. How much in sales does he need to do a day to cover his overhead? This is not even counting some income for him. The number or answer is usually pretty scary. I don't like the way things have gone, but I can't change it.

Everybody wants to buy something and get the best deal. What do we do? We search the internet for the best price. We are all part of the problem. Of course we could go the other route and go to that local giant Wally World store. I chose to skip this option. Times have changed, internet shopping is here whether we like it or not. I don't have a local metal detector dealer nearby, at least not a brick and mortar store. There are a couple of guys operating out of their houses within a couple of hours. They are only home after work. They are lucky if they stock 2 detectors. You can't demo anything. They drop ship everything. If I go to a dealer I want to demo a detector. If I can't do that, I will buy online.

Now back to the big K, Kellyco. Does it really matter anymore? I don't think so. We are years beyond that point now. I have nothing against Kellyco, but when I buy, I have not bought from them. The cheap package adders they ad just turn me off.

I've purchased from Kellyco a number of times both in store and online. The experience has always been great. Service is attentive and knowledgeable, the shipping times unreal. I ordered my Compadre the day before Christmas Eve in 2013 thinking the unit would arrive at the end of the week. It came Christmas Eve day and that was the free shipping option. Granted I live only a few hours away but still that's pretty good. Kellyco is not a huge company, certainly nowhere near the size of Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, or Cabelas. If you are into archery they would compare to a company like Three Rivers Archery in Indiana. They are simply a successful small business that grew very well. They have one location near in the Winter Springs/Casselberry area north of Orlando in Seminole county. I've seen and heard negatives about their operation myself, none of which I have ever experienced. I wonder if it's because they seem big that some folks might not like them, not sure. For me the next machine we buy even a Tesoro will be from Kellyco.

Can't understand why the dealers would be upset. Kellyco handles all the other brands. Did you ask the dealer if he was going to stop selling Garrett? I would have like to hear his response to that.
I personally think it was a smart move for Tesoro, like it or not. I bet their sales have increase since the partnership.
Of course this is only my opinion.:detecting:

i bought my vaquero from kellyco. had no problems with them. called and ordered it tuesday evening, got it friday morning up here in maine. not bad. all the tesoros are the same price. no matter who you buy it from and other brands, they will match any other legit dealers price. i have seen prices for other brands at kellyco cheaper in some cases by hundreds of dollars. if your dealer stops selling tesoros, thats his issue. im sure tesoro is not going to go out of business because a few dealers get all huffy over it. i say, if you dont like kellyco, dont buy from there. im sure kellyco will not go out of business because one out of thousands of people wont buy from them. i know people who dont shop at wall-mart. their not closing because of them...

Marketing is important to all companies. If Tesoro thinks that they can get better market penetration by going with major online retailers, so be it. The Internet has changed business as usual for most companies.

If the product is good, the visibility of the Internet will help. Tesoro has a good product line. The new owners are just trying to increase sales. Makes sense to me.

Kellyco does nothing to promote the Tesoro line. They carry them to satisfy customer demand, but that is it. I have never once seen any of them recommend a Tesoro unit to any customer. They will promote everything except Tesoro and that comes from multiple first hand experiences. I do not believe their sales staff thinks much of Tesoro.

When I bought my Compadre I asked about the quality of the unit and performance. The Kellyco staff member I dealt with knew the machine and was able to give me first hand information on how well it worked. He was also able to compare it to other units in terms of usability and field practicality. I really could not have asked for better service. The other thing is if you are ever in the Orlando area it's a nice place to visit. The showroom is about the size of a small ACE Hardware store and you can handle just about any detector you want. They have test areas you can run the units on and find the one that fits you best. About the fit comment, this is one area folks need to pay attention to. Metal detectors are built to fit everyone in general. If you visit Kellyco you can try the fit of many machines. Sometimes that component is overlooked and a machine is purchase that is uncomfortable to use. The finest machine out there sitting at home in the closet because it does not fit the user is not going to find anything. Bottom line for me anyway Kellyco hits the mark in service and caring for me as a customer.

 When I first started metal detecting ( back in 1989) ,..I bought metal detectors from KellyCo. A guy named "Stu Aurbach" or something like that was running the business. He was a great guy to do business with. I had no complaints with them until one day I needed a small 4 inch coil cover for a Fisher 1266. They were going to send me one for 10 bucks plus 7 dollars shipping. I told them that was ridiculous. They would not re-neg on the price. I would always order their "Huge Catalog" every year. It was 10 bucks and you would get a coupon for 10 dollars off your order. I don't think they do those anymore. Their shipping fees have always been too high. I went on vacation in Florida once and visited them in Maitland. The store looked a lot smaller in person than in the photos. I was kind of disappointed. My dealer still sells Garrett but his main sales are Whites and Minelab now. The industry has changed a lot since 1989. The best years in my opinion were the late "90's. There were a lot of really good , new units being produced from all the manufacturers. No bright colors, no gimmicks, just good solid machines like the Whites Eagle Spectrum and the Classic series. Garrett came out with the CX series. I miss those days. Well, enough nostalgia ...:goodnight:

I haven't bought from Kellyco in many years but never had an issue back then regardless of brand detector. I'd just rather support a small business. Besides, my local dealer gives a much better package deal with real quality accessories, not a " free accessories" package of mostly junk. Don't be afraid to shop around with the many quality forum sponsors.

Hello Everyone. Glad to hear the good stories, and some of the not so grand ones

Being a sales rep here for a while now, and after reading what you guys had to say...we do have to follow guidelines for each company as well. Minelab has been my go to detector personally, but I would not have a job if all I did was try to change peoples minds into a Minelab. Respectively, I enjoy many machines so that really helps to being biased on brands when customers call in to ask about a detector.. I always thought of the Tesoro brand as a hidden jewel amongst all the more popular brands.

We are no longer in Maitland anymore, we did move to a 30000sq ft building, and recently, the show room we did make into a 2 story area now. Made the test yard a bit....sandier, as you will. The place is coming together nicely, although not finished, but the showroom feels great now with the changes and will be even better when it is done. Lots of things have changed over the years, and we have nearly a full new staff lineup from a few years ago and always willing to answer all questions professionally.
