hey guys read some info on the kellyco excellarator 14 inch coil for my xs ,they claim depths of 14-20 inches on a silver dime any truth in this??have any of you pros tried this coil? i have all 3 sunray coils and i have gotten a 1927 sl qt at 11 inches which is pretty deep in the factory mode in my opinion would like some input if possible Thanks guys Robert in wisc i was using the x-12 coil for above qt.and this was at a local park which dates back to 1908

and IMO, the stock coil is as good if not better. Learn what you got. The Explorer was designed to use that coil for a reason. Extra coils are nice, but IMHO, they are not worth the extra money. I have used all of them except the excellarators, and I know someone who has the 14" and 18", I have seen them in action. I still have my SR8" and 5", but very rarely use them. I sold my WOT, SR12" and I field tested the proto Joey. Now with that being said, I will probably get another WOT if nothing else for ground coverage. I think that the WOT acted more like the stock coil than any of the others.
Now on the other hand, if you hunt mainly cellar holes in the woods, you will just about have to get you an 8" or Joey, something smaller because of the brush.
Like I said, I have never had an Excellarator, only compared signals. If I actually had one I might change my mind, but I seriously doubt it.
IMO, if you think you are not getting deep enough with the stock coil, then you haven't learned it yet and will be sadly disappointed with the other coils. Buying a bigger coil does not automatically make up for several hundred hours of experience. You have to have that experience before you will notice any boost from getting a bigger coil. And then that will be minimal.
If you don't have one, the biggest favor you could do yourself would be to get the X-1 probe! Much more important than a coil.

If there is ONE "must-have" accessory for the Explorer, my vote would be for the X-1 Probe. Double-D coils are the very devil to pinpoint with but with an X-1 you don't have to be quite as precise. On shallow coins, the X-1 nails them. Every time I pinpointed a shallow one with it, my regular probe made contact the first time I stuck it in the ground.....but then again, if you bought an Explorer then you're not after shallow coins....at least I'm not

I kept the WOT. It is now my default coil.

Sees the target better.
The excelerator did nothing better than the stock coil.
