Just received an older gold master needing new batteries...is it worth the trouble to re-power or should I spend the money in new stuff...am very new to this??? needing guidance!!

It's worth getting batteries for and keeping . I'm sure you will be getting offers from some who will read this thread .

If you're new to this, you should probably use the machine if it works. You can start to get a feel for the hobby and the machine as well. I used a kids Radio shack detector in the mid 70's, and then never got back into the hobby until 97. In 97 I purchased a Bounty Hunter pioneer 202 at Walmart, and just kept learning from there. Its been good ever since , machines are getting better , and people are always losing things. Good Luck !! Keep us posted. :)
