I'm leaving for Kauai,Hawaii on Memorial Day. Does anyone have any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Rick, I only visited Kauai for about a week, but I'll tell you what I know. We stayed at the Sheraton on Poipu Beach. There are a couple hotels in that area and decent wet sand/water hunting there. One guy, Steve Hershbach, used to go there every year, and he hunted the same place I stayed and he got several gold rings, but he hunted in winter when the rocky bottom was exposed. In summer, when I visited, bottom was all sanded in. Not many targets in the water, but wet beach was decent producer.

Also, we went around the island, trying different beaches, one in particular, known as "Tunnels Beach", near the town of Hannalei, was the best hunting we found. Dry sand there was loaded with coins, water had plenty of targets, but waves were treacherous the day I hunted it. When I was snorkeling near the water's edge, one wave picked me up and slammed me down and literally tore my detector from my hands, and deposited it about 10 yards away. Of course, I didn't see where it went right away, and for about a minute, I thought I had lost a machine.

Hope my info helped you out.

Rick, Just got back from three island trip incl Kauai. Many, many good beaches! Some are heavily hunted such as one Mark suggested near Sheraton. That said, tourists on beaches every day, 7/360, so worth trying. Very hard not to go to any beach and not get rewarded.
I prefer Kalapaki near Merriott (Lihue), Salt Pond near Hanapepe and Anini on north side but many small/large beaches that on a given day will produce.
Winds/shifting sands all year can turn beaches from famon to feast on any given day and back again in 24hrs. Much stronger surge and wave strength that most places mainland. As Mark said, be carefull in surf. Lots of wetted edges that drop off quickly to about four feet before leveling out. Best stuff is @ 4-5 ft, but thats where surf will bang you around unless propected by outer reef. Best advise I have, look for areas with small/medium rocks in water (alongside sand bottom stretches)or reef (coral shelfs) that will block outward flow of good stuff and deposit on beach side. Wear good ankle tight water shoes (wet suit style) coral can be d..m sharp! Download free tide tables from web as even in Hawaii there's a 2-3 ft swing. Get out early if possible as beaches start filling at 8am. Good Luck and leave a little for my next trip! Gary

Thanks Guys! We will be staying in a house on Tunnels beach,so I'll probally start there. I wll have a jeep so anything goes,HE HE!

This March found two 14kt white gold bands at Poipu Beach. Also found a few pieces of silver there. While Lydgate was not very good this year, in past years I have found a 10kt white gold men's band and both a 14kt white gold ladies wedding band with 19 .01 to .015 ct diamonds and a platinum engagement ring with .45 ct in diamonds there. Tunnels is a great beach, just watch the waves. As they say on the island, don't turn your back to the ocean. Happy hunting.

Rick here's a pic of Poipu Beach. The little area to the left is a little kiddie pool area where I saw lots of Moms and kids wading. Looked like a good place to hit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when I was there in Feb.

I was at Poipu in 93' and got scooped by a rogue wave, dropped me onto a coral head and destroyed my left shoulder. Doc said an inch ot two closer to the spine and I'd be swingin a harp!

Was in Kauai a year ago. Found one gold ring in the small public area just beyond the Sheraton [actually in the first 15 minutes of hunting on the first day]. Did not have much luck elsewhere in Poipu other than coins. The best areas seem to be on the North shore of the island. Just take the highway 56 north till it ends at the beach. They get a lot more wave action year round there. This in turn, moves the sand around and also causes people to lose things. Had time to spend only about one hour there but found plenty of keepers.

I hunted around that tidal pool where the little kids and moms hang out. Lot of trash and very little in terms of keepers.

Do not waste your time at the beach by the Hyatt. It is not used by the hotel guests anymore. Found one silver, unreadable dime there.

Remember, all beaches on Kauai are public, so do not feel ill at ease about wandering over the various hotel beaches. Just fill your holes and be polite to the guests.

Good luck
