I can't imagine hunting without a pinpointer, john. But I will also say this -- on those strong signals that you dig for and can't find? They are most often (for me) falsing nails -- which often are detected off to the side of where they actually are (they are usually in the side of your hole, or even an inch or two into the side of the hole). The second-most frequent target that detects "off to the side" of where it actually is, after a rusted, falsing nail? A coin on-edge.
Anyway, where are you located? You said central...central what? I'm in central Oklahoma and I can empathise with you regarding the rock-hard, dry ground...
