I know I can legaly detect my own back yard, the strips between the sidewalk and the road, and the parks, where else can I legaly hunt without having to get permission?

I don't know where you live, but here in Arizona most land is government controlled one way or another, either BLM, state, etc. Some state land may be prohibited, but BLM and railroad land is usually ok. Stay away from any marked historical sites, archaeological sites, etc.

I've never had a problem on vacant lots that are unmarked, but it is certainly privately owned unless it has been annexed by the city for new streets, etc. Open school athletic fields are good here and have never been a problem.

These places work for me but things are so different in different states that it's nearly impossible to say.

In NC I have had no problems with the schools. I just make sure to go on weekends or when not in session. Sometimes parks oare a no go. I ran into a city that does not allow MD'n in any city parks?

I also like to look for areas that are being bought out by city or state. My town is putting a new road in. It is a State project. All the homes being torn down, or moved hvae become prime spots for me. look for this kind of thing also.

Another area that I like to hit is tot lots. These produce good finds and get lots of activity. I found a gold ring in a tot lot.

Do you have local public swimming areas? If so these are great even if concrete. The areas around the pools that are grass can produce good.

One of my favorite areas is public ball fields. I have found a bunch of stuff at public ball fields. I like to hit the area around the snack stand and near the bleachers. Also the areas where people ust hang out.

Good luck to you, Beale.

On the town where you are wanting to detect, where I live nobody cares where you detect, (In fact, they think your'e wasting your'e time and not very smart)
some towns will have a sign in the park , stating no detecting (because somebody dug all over the place), if in doubt, i stop a local policeman or stop by the town office and check if the town has any ordnances against it:detecting:

ive never had any problems looking around churches.if they have an on site parsonage i always check in with the minister.

one place that I would love to detect but it is not allowed is the fairgrounds after the fair leaves, I asked once and they said no cause if they let me do it others would want to, even though I have never seen anyone else around here detecting. Also one time I asked at a church if I could detect and they said I could detect but I couldn't dig, what is the point of detecting if you can't dig up what you have detected?

When I moved here to Phoenix,I called the parks department and asked about their regs on detecting, was told "Yes, you can metal detect the parks, but you can not dig anything.".Targets shouldn't be only a few inches deep here anyway as it is thin grass over sand and rocks.A lot of money is spent watering what grass is here,so I see their point in not wanting it cut or dug.
