It's been a busy week for wierd water events in Bermuda. On Sunday a 38 year old man was injured when fishing for marlin or swordfish. The 800 lb. marlin was on the line when it leapt out of the water harpoon the fisherman through the shoulder with its bill and carried him right off the deck of the boat back into the water. The swordfish shook the fisherman off its bill and the fisherman was able to swim up to the surface and was rescued by his mates. The fisherman Ian Card lives just around the corner from me and is recovering with a fist size hole in his shoulder at King George Hospital.

Yesterday another fisherman was fishing for bonefish at the ferry dock a mile down the road from my place in Somerset. Suddenly all the bait fish dissappeared and he saw a large dark shape in the water, so being an enterprising Bermudian he pulled some 600 lb. test out of his tackle box and hooked one of his bait fish to it. The fisherman had a bite in less than ten seconds and what a bite it was on just a hand line, it almost pulled him into the water. Fortunately he was able to grab onto a telephone pole at the edge of the dock and use it to hold onto his fish by wrapping the line around the pole to increase drag. He fought this big dark shape for over an hour until it tired enough to bring it along side the dock.
This is what he saw.

His buddy took the picture with his cellular phone just before the 8 foot shark bit through the line.
Pass the shark repellent please!
Have a happy and safe hunt this weekend,
BDA
I'll be keeping an eye open for sharks.
