Just what is it highly mineralized ground and how I tell ?

Just what highly mineralized ground anyway and how do I know if I have it? Does it even matter if I am using ferrous-coin? I've never done a ground balance and do I have to if using Ferrous-coin? Just one of the many things to learn about with this complicated machine.
Thanks

I was told that if the auto sens kept itself at a lower reading , it was because your in higher mineralized soil,,,,, also if you take a magnet and scrub the dirt with it and it comes up with lots of stuff stuck to it it hot dirt

With so many things to be be watching on the screen I don't pay much attention to what the auto sensitivity is doing so that is one thing that i will pay more attention to. Thanks

It is not so bad Martygene. Your ground should be relatively consistent - at least most ground doesn't vary tremendously. (Perhaps farmland does due to some areas using higher fertilizers than others).
So, just watch the sensitivity level a few times and if it is usually in the lower teens (or lower), the ground is higher in mineralization. It is not something you need to watch often, just to get a feel for the ground.

I think Minelab needs to add the ground mineralization level in an update. It would be very handy regarding sharing settings, performance results, etc.

Re: Just what is it highly mineralized ground and how I tell ?

Hello there Marty....

In metal detecting terms, mineralisation specifically refers to the MAGNETIC class of minerals found in the ground.

There are many other minerals.(Of no comparable consequences.)

The main one most detectorists are familiar with, is named as FERRITE; and identified by the formula / code, Fe3 O4. (Ferrous and oxygen)

It has a very strong magnetic influence, and so affects the INDUCTANCE value of your detector's search head.

The effect is detrimental to the normally balanced state of the coils, required for sensitive searching.

It reduces the penetration of the magnetic search-field'

It also 'biases' the resultant signal evaluation (VDI), produced by the detector's system.

I hope that is sufficient an answer.....too much of a detailed reply may add confusion rather than help.

HOW to BE AWARE OF THE PRESENCE AND 'LEVEL' OF SUCH MINERALISATION...?

As implied by other replies, the best indicator is the AUTO LEVEL reading...i.e. the right-hand-side one, shown in the sensitivity panel,

and adjacent to the manual sensitivity setting chosen by you the operator.

'Average or NORMAL ground mineralisation levels produce an AUTO reading of about 16.

As Fe mineralisation INCREASES, so the AUTO reading DECREASES..falling to levels of 12 or less as the mineralisation severity increases.

Hope that brief explanation helps.....Matt.

Yes. It sure does. Just what I was looking for. Thanks a bunch to all. I will be keeping a closer eye on the sens level too.
