i was under the impression that when the explorer has a line circling the sens number that it is in auto and the numbers mean nothing .i have read post with people saying they are running say 28 auto,i though that would be just auto and what ever number the computer picks which you wont see, when auto is off thats the actual number your on?

My understanding of it, and as it appears to say in the manual, is that when it's in Semi-Auto, it will adjust itself as close to your specified level as possible for the ground condidtions. And it will drop it down if needed. So if you have Semi-Auto circling around 28 then it MAY go as high as 28 or to any lower setting. This is what it says in the book. I seldom use it that way. I set it to manual and run it as high as it will go and remain stable. Actually, I probably set it a couple notches light. I usually run like 24 to 28, somewhere in there.

One thing I do a lot is when I find a deep target, lower the sens down repeatedly to see at what point I lose the target and at what point my signal stops improving. You can try that with Semi-Auto too. You'll be surprised how deep it will go at the lower settings.

Is the higher you set the sensitivity in auto the more it seems to over compensate in trash. What I seen is if you had it at 32 auto in trash you may not even pick up a dime on top of the ground, but it sure runs smooth. Now if you drop it to 16 auto you will see the depth will increase quite a bit over the 32 auto. When at the 16 auto it don't seem to drop the sensitivity quite as bad as it will at 32 auto.
Now if you tried to run it in manual at maybe 20 it may not be as stable, but the depth may be the best there as you are not letting the detector pick your sensitivity.
Now where the auto you will notice makes a big difference is try ruining at 1 sensitivity and do a air test on a dime, then switch to auto and auto will make a big difference on the depth, so we find that in auto the sensitivity can go higher or lower than what it is set at, just at higher settings in trash we seen where auto will over compensate and drop the sensitivity too low. Now I only run auto in very clean area no higher than 24, or if trashy no higher than 16 and try to run manual most of the time as long as the detector is stable or close to it for max depth.

As was said before. The manual says in semi-auto the Explorer will keep the sensitivity as close to the number you pick but the machine to make the machine stable. Personally, I use manual almost all of the time. I have used 16 semi-auto to recover areas I've detected before that are trashy. I have had good result in picking out coins in trash using 16 semi-auto. IMHO, semi-auto works well for beginners in medium to heavy iron. I've noticed the Explorer seems alot less likely to false on iron. I really don't think the Explorer is even close to what sensitivity you pick in semi-auto. So, I put it on 16 and forget about it in that mode. I don't think the Explorer keeps the machine even close anyways because I have tested the Explorer using 1 in semi-auto and manual. Both should act identical but they don't. In semi-auto the Explorer increases the sensitivity way beyond 1 judging by it's detecting abilities. Manual acts as it should.

Please explain what you mean by "The book is wrong...". The book says it will keep it as close to the setting that you set for it but will adjust it as needed. Which is what I said and what I interpret the book to say. So what part of that is wrong?

Read Bill W.'s post above or we discussed this on a recent thread over in the classroom.

Ok, so you're saying it may go well above where you set it. Well I've never dropped mine to 1, so I wouldn't know about that but I would hope that it would do that. That makes more sense. Me, I never use Semi-auto. I do most of my hunting at whatever I can get away with manually...in the neighborhood of 28 or more, depending on the location. And I run IM -16 almost all the time. Listen to it all, dig what sounds good.
