ive watched how some people detect and wonder how they manage to find anything at all. it seems they dont have a mental plan at all, sweep high off the ground, start in the center of the area being searched, and seemingly avoiding the known hot spots in yards! or theyre carrying so much stuff it takes them 5 minutes to get their digging iron out! its always good to form a search plan beforehand and get a good mental picture of where the action took place on a particular piece of ground... where is the clothesline... what path would they take to get in their car...any signs of a picnic table front or back yard? you know, questions like that. one guy i saw was running his machine like a scythe, i just had to chuckle at that. i got him to go real low and slow with his coil, overlapping his passes and getting a good idea of how naturally wide his sweep pattern was. then he started to find the good stuff! at the end of the yard, i had my new buddy take 2 steps left, turn around and continue. this was a much better and more organized search pattern than starting in the center of the yard, being confused about where hed already been and possibly missing out on the old nickels and old crackerjack ring he found that day. just trying to help out a neighbor who was new to the hobby and had no earthly idea of what he was doing! my new found buddy has gone on to become a great coin shooter in his own right, and im happy and proud of the fact that i could help him out. i think its cool to help other hunters out, and try to teach them all the lessons that i had to learn the hard way. i truly believe thats when youve really reached the top pinnacle of the hobby - by sharing and teaching your knowledge and experience to others who need it. thanks 4 reading,hh,
