Hey what gives? I called Whites and they said that the Surfmaster PI has the same depth capabilities as the Surfmaster PI Pro? I wanted to send mine in for an upgrade and they said that nothing has changed with the circuit board!! I was reading on some posts that the PI Pro goes deeper? What is going on? I would like to hear some feedback!! Aloha

danny what a lot of these companies do is alter the detector slightly and give it a new name eg PRO - XS- XS PRO GT and so on ,fisher have done the same with the cz20- cz21 minelab with the excalibur all they did was give the new one a fluro color change. mate save some bucks and get an excalibur or a fisher cz20-21 all your probs will be over.aloha terry

"Capabilities" is the clue. In fact the newer machine may well be less deep than the older model on some beaches as for black sand you really do need the pulse delay which they decided to replace with a gain control on the newer model. They should have redesigned the case so it was possible to have both . They could then offer a battery holder that takes two more batteries as they did with the first Surfmaster model so that rechargables could be used without loss of performance and detecting time.

I had my PI upgraded to be more sensitive to gold by Mr. Bill (surfscanners metal detector) . I believe that it operates just like the PI pro

I don't care who told you that at Whites, their misleading you. Does anyone truly believe that they spent all that money to re-design the Surfmaster PI, and they didn't accomplish anything ?

Brian is correct, the mistake they made was removing the pulse delay control, plus they have the circuit gains cranked up a bit too much, causing unstableness. Still, with it's short comings, the Surf.PI Pro is more sensitive toward gold jewelry than a stock Surfmaster PI of past.

Mr Bill, Is the Pre-Pro model then better than the PI Pro other than the sensitivity toward gold? Also will I lose ability if I use a 2500 mHa rechargeable vs regular alkalines? I use NiMH instead of NiCaDs. I have the Surfmaster PI Pulse Diver (1995 model). Appreciate any adice! [ /size]

Well better may not be the best choice of words, but I would opt out for the older Pulse PI like your Diver, and modify it for more sensitivity.

Using the re-chargeable cells doesn't appear to have a noticeable performance affect on the Surfmasters. There is a drop in audio volume from the lower cell voltage with a NiCad cell, but the rest of the circuit runs on a regulated 5 volts. I haven't seen a need to use rechargeable cells because the battery life is so good with alkaline cells. I have never compared the performance between either. If the modified unit get close to 12" on a US nickel in the shop, I'm happy.

Thanks Mr Bill, Appreciate your insight. My older unit can be modified then, and if so, is it costly and where would it be done? Thanks, Tim

Thanks, I'll check it out, Tim
