I Was walking on a boardwalk yesterday, and saw a man digging for goods with his $40 metal detector that he bought at a garage sale. I saw what he had in his hand; coins, old and new and a gold necklace with a charm on it. I was hooked.
But what to get? The little I have read about the Ground Hawk the more it seems to get to the point without all the bells and whistles. What do you suggest? Will this one help me with the little to the Big adventures? Do I need a pin-pointer?

Any help would be great; I want to purchase one asap

Thank you

John

Any good name brand detector will work. The simpler the better. I would not get a XLT or an Explorer off the bat. Lots of good used machines out there. If you are primarily going to hunt the beach, I would choose a detector for that specifically.

BUT

If there is a detector dealer in your town or within 100 miles of you, THAT is the best place to buy your machine. He will show you how to use it, know the local laws and soil conditions. When you have trouble, that dealer will help you get your machine fixed. Being a detector dealer is a rather thankless job, and these guys spend time they could be out detecting helping everyone else make great finds.

Good luck!

Read the forums and reviews. A local dealer is usually a good bet as well as any local clubs.
I would start with a name brand machine. They type of machine should match the type of detecting you plan on doing. There are gold machines, water machines, mixed mode machines for different hunting etc., machines with and without display screens, high dollar top dogs with feature pack bells and whistles to inexpensive simplistic machines.
Determine your needs, what needs you may add soon afterwards, what machines fit the bill, what you want out of the machine, and what accessories to add. Sometimes it seems to go on and on. I see you have a good start by having Internet with load on information.

My last machine purchased a couple weeks ago - a Silver uMax - is a simplistic fun little effective machine. It works well and is very affordable.
I enjoyed it last week more than expected. Just can't go wrong with the Silver uMax. Will probably use it and another Tesoro this weekend.
