Thanks Randy,

Yesterday I finally torqued my back again, maybe for the season:)
But not before finding an 1895 Nickel, and 2 as yet undated 1800's cents that I am still processing with Hydrogen Peroxide and hopeful.
I will call it my Lucky 7 day except for the back went out on Friday just an hour after finding an 1895 IH Cent,
and I took Saturday in bed all day, but on Sunday I tried again and maybe I am just not 19 anymore.

Were the 1800's cents Large cents or IH's? Take care of theat back deal "been there done that" Good old muscle relaxers for a couple months finally got mine back in order, take care.

Oh, not in Oregon, at least not very damn often.
We did not have much in the way of commerce here until around 1887 or later.
Both of the cents are IH and one is 188? the other is 18?? and they are both still soaking in hydrogen peroxide.

I am wondering if maybe most of the encrustation is soft enough that I should try something like olive oil.

Yeah, finding a large cent, even in downtown Portland, OR is not a common thing at all.

Thanks for asking about the back.
I began a prednisone treatment yesterday and am feeling much better, although I will have to go much easier on my next outing.

Your odds of finding a Large Cent in Oregon are similar to mine here in extreme SW Iowa. Similar era of settlement 1880"s although a few earlier. However it is possible, although in my 37 years of detecting it hasn't happened. I have found many IH's and have found that if you carry a small vial of water with you, old medicine bottle, when you dig an old copper coin if you immediately put it in the container and when you get home they cleanup much easier. Also your mention of the olive oil soak will help. After the olive oil bath for several days you can use an ordinary toothpick to help clean the coin. Doesn't seem to scratch it, but will really help in the cleaning process.
Good Luck with the back treatment!!

Thanks Bill,

Most of the acute pain is blocked out by the prednisone treatment but now I can really feel the injured area.
And it scares the hell out of me, so even though it looks like I may miss some key chances at the the construction site, my back needs to heal.

Too dang bad you went and hurt your back and hopefully it won't be for the whole season. Rest up and in the mean time we'll all hunt double hard for ya.
On the peroxide to olive oil switch, make sure the coins dry out well before popping into the oil. I don't think it would hurt the Indians but I lost a couple Roman coins. The peroxide, still being "active", the oil contained the residual action... the coins delaminated. (Cheap 4th century bronzes but still...)
