Just saying hello and still learning...

I am still reading here everyday and still learning. I know I am the one that said this is such a easy machine to use, and it is. The hard part is mastering to the greatest potential. I have been doing nothing but working in trashy parks, figured once you learn trash...you would know the coins. Not sure this is true yet but working on this idea. It is a hour or better drive to my so called good locations and just want to be prepared. I have been having pretty good luck all-in-all. Been finding a lot of wheatie, tons of clad..not much silver, but in these worked out parks that isn't bad. I have learned to slow down and listen a lot better. I have been digging a lot more nickels as well. On my nickels they never seem to vary much in ID, if it stays in the 10-12 area it's a good sign. If it hits 8 or 14 at all...it's junk. And no double beeps or stutter sounds...just my experiences. I found a quarter that gave sound only and (--) on the screen. You may have guessed, iron right on top of it. So use your ears. I am digging most of the coins in the 6" range and know the 70 can do better. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestion or hints on the deeper ones. I make sure I get a signal from both directions and if it doesn't vary much on the ID, I dig it. If you are digging deeper coins please share some ideas on what to watch for. Are they sounding good? ID'ing good? I am still using pattern 1 because of the trash and really like it. Also love the 10.5dd 7 kHz and 4 tones. Would love to hear your stories, just luck or what made you dig it? How deep?

I was wondering how high you were able to set the Sensitivity? Generally speaking, the higher the sensitivity, the deeper you will detect. Another couple things you might want to "play with" are the Noise Cancel channels and the GB. I find that here, I am able to run the X-70 with max sensitivity without causing incorrect TID or chatter. Especially in areas that don't have a lot of modern trash. As to Noise Cancel, I usually let mine choose it's own channel, via Auto NC. But every once in awhile I will move it around a bit to see if I get any improvement in signal response. And, I also set my GB automatically. Then I check it via manual GB, and move it a setting or two more positive. (lower number). I have convinced myself that doing these things, in addition to what you mentioned, will maximize the depth capability of the X-70. In my coinshooting articles, I mentioned that coins will usually lock on without varying the notch segment number by more than two notches. For coins laying flat, and without adjacent trash, this is true. Out of curiosity, I have dug several "one way" signals. Although the vast majority of these have not been coins, I have found a couple coins on edge. And, I found one IH cent that was just too deep to give a positive response from every direction. I still spend most of my time digging only those targets with consistent, multi-directional responses. But, when I am in the mood to dig some extra holes, I will dig some of the "iffy" signals. They are usually trash. But as I said, once in awhile it surprises me with a coin.

Just a few ideas I thought I would pass along. HH Randy

Thank you Digger for responding. I am only able to run my sensitivity at about 25 or 26. I do also auto noise cancel and auto ground balance as well. I use tracking at times, but keep turning it off as I am afraid I will balance something out I shouldn't have. I have a bad habit of re-swinging those targets...trying to make them sound good. LOL I haven't tried, but will move the ground balance down a notch or two and try that. I have dug some coins at 8" or so but still have to wonder what a deep one sounds like. What is it that I am not noticing or missing. I am in a position now where I am in a apartment so not able to make a test garden. I don't feel a freshly buried coin is accurate to test with. I am going to try to do some hunting outside the parks for more testing this weekend. Thank you for your help Digger and I still dig my share of trash too.

I would keep tracking on and only turn it of to get a loosing signal back then turn tracking back on once you have found the lost target again. I have more success with tracking on then when it is off.
Cheers!
