Just picked up nice GTI 2000

Hey Guys, I just picked up a nice GTi 2000 w/ stock coil and 12.5 Imaging coil.
The 12.5 coil was never used, I posted it on the classifieds because I just don't care for big coils.
I did notice there is a proformance 9.5 " spider coil on the newer machines.
Is there much diff. in performance between this coil and my stock white Donut imaging coil.
Which small coil would you reccomend for this machine. I like cocentric coils better than DD coils as my soil is mild and tend to get better perfomance with concentric coils down here in Texas.

I'm looking forward to learning this detector and will keep you informed on how I'm doing with it.
I'm just going to have to get out of the habit of grabbing the detector I'm most familar with when I go hunting.
Learning a new detector takes some fortitude which I have a problem with at my old age.

Any tips would be appreciated.

HH, Tico

What you have is a slightly tweaked 2500. I tested the 2000 way back when then in just a few weeks they introduced the 2500. So aside from a couple of insignificant features you have a 2500. The Proformance coil is just a bit more stable ( due to being solid whereas the Scorcher is hollow ) but I prefer the Scorcher as it is lighter and pinpoints easier and better. So unless you figure you can't live without the newer coil you are loaded for bear. I have a field test on the 2000 that I could post or send you a copy of.

And the DD's have other advantages aside from cutting through mineralization along with the disadvantage of loving bottlecaps. Their increased performance is why most manufacturers are offering them as their stock coil on all new machines. And you should have hung onto to that big coil as you can cover acres of ground with it and it pinpoints just like the stock coil.

Ok Guys, you talked me into it, I decided to keep the big coil. Like you say It woud come in handy covering ome big ground.

Uncle Willy, I think I saw your field test be searching back on the forum, It's a copy from a treasure magazine circa 1997ish.
I'll go back and read it.

Looking forward to giving this big boy a work out as soon as this heat subsides some.

One question, in the all metal mode, which I understand is deep, do you usually manually Ground balance or just let the auto trac do it's thing?

HH, Tico

The auto track works great unless you run into some really nasty stuff then manual is the only way or if you're finicky and just want it perfect.

Hey Tico, Pick-up a 5 x 10 scorcher DD coil while your at it for those trashy areas you'd run up against. Pretty good coil, I'd say. Listen to Uncle Willy, he knows his stuff.

I field tested that puppy I believe in the latter part of 1997, and a few weeks later they changed it to the 2500 and I tested that one. . The tests I think were in Gold & Treasure Hunter magazine ( no longer in publication ). It's essentially the 2500 with just a different number in the name.

It's really hot down here in Texas so I have been playing around with the gti airtesting.
In coin mode with factory settings I get a clad dime at around 10/11":, Constant bell tone at about 10"
I put it in zero disc and bumped up sen to 9.5, and not much diff. maybe gained 1/2"
In all metal I was getting the dime at around 15" or better
Question, Why is the threshold so loud in all metal, I tried to adjust it down in menu but didn't seem to have any effect when I switched back to search.
Threshold was still loud.

If you adjusted the threshold it should remain at the level that you adjusted it to, unless you reset the machine to factory levels by pushing and holding the power button for a few seconds. It may be a good idea to send your detector in to Garrett for a check up. It doesn't cost much. The GTI 2000 is the exact same unit as the GTI 2500 without the backlight. Of course, it has Treasure Talk, as the current 2500's are made without it. I've even known some guys to have sent their 2000's in to have that mineral chip installed. That'd be a good idea, too.
You should get that lil 4.5" Scorcher, since you like concentrics(well it's actually co-axial). It's great for tot lots and trashy areas. I prefer the double D coils myself. Oh yeah, and as far as stock coils go, that white Scorcher Imaging coil is my favorite. Lightweight and pinpoints great like Uncle Willy says. As far as ground balance goes, unless you are used to having a machine with manual ground balance, I'd just stick with the FastTrack while in All Metal Mode until you get some more time on the machine. Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Keep us posted!:wiggle:Happy Hunting!:)

I figured out the threshold, I just wasn't turning it down enough.

I just bought a gti 2000 myself and glad to hear Im not the only one to have to go back to school. I have been using a whites idx classic. So any advice about this detector would be of great help.Im on new ground here. I would like to tweak it a bit with a couple of coils for diffrent conditions. Here in oklahoma there is tons of sandstone and clay, also some sand. Oh, and lets not forget the scrap iron. So what do you think ? Anyone got any ideals.
