Just picked up a Whites Coinmaster 5000 D Series 2, 8 inch coil..........any good?

Older machine with lot's of knobs, seems to work ok. Tips or tricks?

Also what battery packs is it supposed to have???

The 5900 series 2 uses an 8 cell AA holder and a 6 cell AA holder. Whites did offer rechargeable packs and a charger as an option. I don't know if they are still available. The 6 & 8 cell holders are available from Radio Shack.

I had one many year's ago and I found a lot of stuff with it. I can't remember everything about it but a couple of thing's stand out. One is to slowly raise and lower the coil while adjusting the tuner knob until the threshold stay's even when you bring it down to the ground. you will have to do this every once in awhile to be sure it is still in tune. This next thing is really cool and I wish I could do this with my new modern machine. When you get a target lay the coil about half way over the target and detune the machine by pressing and releasing the button in the handle. You can keep moving the center of the coil closer and closer to the target and you can do this over and over until the target disappear's completely then you will have to start over. But what you want is a tiny response and you will be amazed at how tightly you can pinpoint a target this way. After you recover your prize just retune it with the button and off you go.

This is a very nice feature currently available on my Fisher F75 LTD. It is also a standard feature on the legacy F75. You're right; the pinpointing can be 'dead on'!
