Just ordered my new 5x8 coil from Bart at Big Boys Hobbies!

He's a great guy to do business with. Thanks again.

Nice choice...both with the coil and the vendor. Got my AT Pro from Bart and I was extremely pleased with his service.

That is funny.

I just ordered the 5 x 8 coil and cover from Bart yesterday.

He is very professional and gave me the best price out of 4 vendors I contacted.

Can't wait to try it out.

And you are going to have a lot of fun with that coil. It is sooooo sensitive to tiny objects and gets decent depth too.

I also got my AT Pro from Bart over a year ago now. He is a very pleasant fellow to deal with.

Got the 5x8 with mine. Like others have said, I've never taken it off. I hunt a lot of campgrounds, which are loaded with trash. With that 5x8, I'm constantly digging trash out of the same whole as coins. It's an amazing combination, and a lot of fun to hunt with. Ground is frozen here now until April, so keep posting your finds. HH

When I was researching what detector to buy, back in January, a lot of the guys on this thread recommended getting the 5X8 coil and an extra lower rod, with the Pro. One of them told me that most likely when I put the 5X8 coil on, I would be along time before I took it off. Put the 5X8 on in April, hasn't come off yet. I'm betting you're gonna love it. Good luck, and keep us posted. Artie

What is your average small copper\silver coin depth Art ? I know that there are many factors influencing a signal, but what does your gut tell you ? 5-6 inches, 6-7?, of honest average depth on small coins ? Personally that would be more than adequate for my city needs.

First, let me be brutally honest, I spend more time on the beach with my other detector, so I don't consider myself an expert on the Pro (I do love it though). In the town I live in, we have a large field that the town uses for soccer, baseball, and watching the Fourth of July fireworks, this has gotten most of my dirt fishing attention. I have dug dimes, and pennies at 6-8 inches, most coins I find are 4-6 inches, but I believe that's because it's the depth they are at, not anything to do with coil or machine. I did not use the stock coil for a very long time, so I have no idea what changes, when you make a coil change. I do believe the depth reading is thrown off, not sure of whether the targets are deeper than shown, or shallower. One thing I would like to pass on, in case you aren't aware of it, is womans/small gold rings will/can have VDI numbers in the low 40's. I found a 10K Claddaugh ring, that rang up at 45, and a 14K ring with 13 diamonds (worth about $2.00 apiece) that rang up at a 46. I use Pro mode zero, at this field, not a ton of trash. Rings were 4 inches down, and with numbers in the 40's, they came in with a mid tone, but I don't know how to explain this, it was a more pure midtone sound than anything else I found. My hearing is so-so, bascially tone deaf, and I was swinging away and this sound just grabbed my attention. Being the main sports fields for the town, there are a lot of parents watching these games, they all drink coffee. The round foil cover from the cream containers, comes in at a 43, every time. After digging about a 100 of them, I no longer dig any 43 at this site. That sound from the two rings, both low/mid 40's , was just a much more pleasant/pure sound. I use the sensitivity one bar from max, this has worked for me so far. I have swung the Pro, with the 5X8 coil on it for over 4 hours at a time, not bad for an outta shape, old fart. (least that's what I feel like). Now if I was gonna make a run at a large field or area, I would probably start with the larger coil, to cover more ground faster, but for the near future, just doing yards, play fields and the like, I don't see me putting the stock coil back on, any time soon. Again, I'm no expert, but any questions/ideas/thoughts you wanna bounce off someone, doesn't bother me. Keep us posted on how you do with the new coil, what your experiences are. Good luck, Artie

I put my 5 X 8 inch coil on today because of all the trash and it found part of a rivet at between 4-5 inches. You're right about that tone, Artie. It's sweet and you know it's something good. Most of my trash targets are loud, except for the foil that sounds just like a ring sometimes. It's a gold looking foil and I've only ran into it at our church and this old school I went to today. I do prefer the larger coil most times and even the 5 X 8 went nuts with all the trash and the over head power lines. Changing the frequency didn't help, but I just figured it had been so long since I went detecting, I had to start all over again. HH.

Excellent answer, thanks. I feel that the 5x8 and I are going to have a lasting relationship. Interesting comment about the cream foil covers. I ran into a LOT of the foil covers that covered the old glass milk jugs, this year. Good tips on the 40's signals, which I tend to ignore.

Sounds like me, I forget a lot over the winter here, kind of lose the edge you know.

Im another 5x8 coil fan on the AT Pro. Ive only taken it off twice this last year to hunt open non-trashy fields and half way through those hunts i put the 5x8 back on and the hunt got better. My brother hasn't gotten himself one yet but every time we go out he swears he's gonna get one based on the amount of my good finds compared to his....maybe he will get one for christmas. ;). I just recieved my new XP Deus from Bart a couple of weeks ago. Great deal. He is definately gonna be my go to guy for detecting supplies from now on....Thanks Bart

I have purchased 2 very high end detectors fro Bart. He gave me the best deal I could find. If he cannot get you something he will recommend someone else. How can it be any better than that?

As for the 5x8 coil, I put mine on almost two years ago and the big coil.has not been out of the closet since then. In my ground hunting sports parks, parks, median strips and yards, 95 % of all coins, clad or silver are 2 to 4 inches. Rings and other jewelry are mostly lest than 5". Foil hits around 42 to 45. If it is wadded up foil it hits in the nickel range. 48 to 53 and very crisp tone. Pull tabs and junk aluminum hits a 53 to 56 and is very scratchy in tone. If you are digging a lot of nickels you are on the right track. 14K gold hits in the 57, 58 range for me. All other gold for me rings up all over the place. I have never hit gold at 42 or 43, that is usually coffee creamer tops or aluminum / cardboard tops off of milk or OJ containers.
If you get odd numbered repeatable hits such as 04,06, 15, 18, 39, 40, 48, 57, 58, 59, 61, 77, 78, 79, you better dig each and every one. These are the strange find signals that render low grade gold, chains, tokens, and most of all coin spills with different denominations of coins stacked on top of each other. I hit a 78 last week, it was 3 quarters, 2 dimes, a nickel, and 2 pennies stacked up in that order. The top penny was a 2011, then a 1979 penny then the nickel, then the dimes, then the quarters. Go figure!! Those kinds of spills happen a lot.
Hope this helps, remember to dig every repeatable clean crisp signal, and you cannot go wrong.

Thanks for reading. HAPPY HUNTING, GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY THE HOBBY. it's not what you find, it's the thrill of not knowing until you dig it.
