just ordered an xterra 705

hello everyone

new to the forum but not completely new to detecting...just ordered an xterra 705 and was wandering if i made a good choice for a fairly easy to operate detector...i currently own an old teknetics 8000, a garrett ace 250 (which is going to my father-in-law for a b-day present),a whites treasuremaster pi-1000 and a whites dfx....so my toys range from old to new but the dfx has about got the best of me, so i hope i am getting something i can get used to fairly easy but still be able to pick up one of my others and have to completely be stumped by it again...

anyway tell me everything about it good and bad...

Hi,
you have made a great choice. I have had the X-Terra 705 - Gold pack for about 8 months now & It gets a very solid workout.

One of the greatest sources of information you can get, will be from one of the first postings submitted by "Digger" at the top of the X-Terra page on this forum. This will cut the learning curve quite considerably.

One of the other pieces of info that is really useful is the "Coil info page" on the Minelab website. (www.minelab.com/__files/f/11792/KBA_02-1_Coil_Selection_Guide.pdf)
This page will tell you the different frequencies, coil sizes, whether a particular coil is waterproof or just water resistant & suggestions as to the best usage for a particular coil.

My detector has just about paid for itself now. It has been very reliable & the only problem that I have had, was the detector started to continually scan rapidly through its codes & started "warbling" to itself. It turned out to be a collection of dust & small sandlike stones that had collected inside the coil attachment socket on the main control unit. I cleaned this socket out with some air & a soft brush & the detector is purring like a kitten.

All the best,
Gary.

thanks gary

just got done reading the understanding your xterra book....very good info and does a very good job explaining operation and techniques...the different coil frequencies are very interesting, i also like how the vflex system works, coil and control box in tune with each other...unlike my dfx where two frequencies are generated in the box and travel to the coil and most likely not tuned together...i am also an amateur radio operator so that explains why i like the properly tuned transmit and receive areas...i have been wanting to give the minelabs a try, so i hope this works out like i hope...

thanks
kevin

Hi Kevin.
You'll love the X-Terra. learning them is very intuitive. (Very easy to learn.) It has similarities to the Ace, however the audio and numeric TID are easier to work with over the Ace. I had a couple of Aces, and enjoyed them, but do prefer the X-Terras. There aren't much in the way of vises on the X-Terras, pretty strait forward. About the only things that I would suggest. When you start up for a hunt, remember to noise cancel and I would strongly recommend turning on the target ID stabilisation feature as this really helps to give more reliable target ID. Other than that, she's a sweet detector to use, light and simple with fairly decent performance. You'll have many hours of fun with it.

well i was going to get the 705 but i was given the chance to get an explorer xs...so the guys at kellyco were understanding and cancled my order, so now i own an explorer and i will be in the explorer forums...

thanks for the good info here

kevin

You'll love the XS Kevin. I had one till I upgraded it last year. The audio is awesome. Listen for smooth even tones over good targets, plus you may notice a difference in the width of targets after a bit. Once mastered, I consider the Minelab FBS detectors to be the best on the market. About the only thing that might challenge it, would be the Whites V3i, but I've never used one.
Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum. You made a great choice. I have a friend who has a xlt and I walk right over where he just walked and find things.
