Just ordered an MX5....

After painstakingly considering all my options, I went with a White's MX5. Honestly, seems like the best bang for my buck as I'm familiar with White's stuff, it's compatible with the Eclipse line of coils and I actually had a dealer not try to sell me an AT Pro right as they answered the phone.

I had 2 dealers say go with the new MX5 over the M6 and expect better depth with the MX5. Interesting. I had an M6. I liked it and don't recall WHY I parted with it. Just got the itch for a new machine, I guess.

If anyone's interested, I'll keep you posted and try to present a review after I have some time with it.

I like my mx5 over my m6 but couldn't part with my m6. Figure I'll keep a smaller coil on it for real trashy spots.

Been out for only two hunts this spring. Still some frost in the ground in places here in western Wisconsin. In two hunts I have found $5.92 in clad with one small ring and 1 wheat. Been hunting with 6x8 sef coil so far. Deepest has been 6 1/2 so far. I was able to raise the coil alittle off the ground and still got a repeatable signal. I also have a MXT and feel I may just part with it as the MX5 seems to be a winner. I do like it a lot so far. The meter seems more accurate, lighter, with more adjustments than my MXT .I dug 8 nickels yesterday and if the meter said 18-20 it was a nickel almost always.. I also was usually able to tell a dime from a copper cent. Most dimes read 79-81 and the nonzinc cents( 77-79) never hit 80 or 81. I don't recall my MXT being that accurate. I might also ad this was sometimes at depths of 4-6 in. also. The stand by mode is really nice when digging a target. My TRX pinpointer does affect the MX5 but when in standby no problem at all. The more I use the TRX the more I like it. Took alittle getting use to after using a garrett for several years. Hope it will be as durable, only time will tell on that. I will say the M6-MXT's are also great detectors. If you relic hunt a lot or gold hunt the MX5 is probably not the better detector. For coin & jewelry hunting the MX5 will do a great job. For less money also. If I seen any minus features so far it would be the trigger pinpoint and no rear headphone jack. For me so far the features the MX5 has still makes it a better choice . Just my 2 cents. Happy Hunting

Thanks for the in-depth info.... It really helps. Especially since this is not only a new Whites model (for the most part) but my first new detector in about 4 years. I'm really looking forward to getting out there but us poor cheeseheads are still holed up indoors, bundled up and waiting for this god-awful winter to finally go bye bye.

My last machine(s) were a Fisher F4 and F5. I had some quality issues with those (sent them both back at least once for electronics repair and the lock-collars on the shaft would break constantly) but overall had a good experience with them.

I've never owned a Garrett. No particular reason why, I'm sure they're good machines. I can tell ya that the White's stuff is built like a tank. This'll be the first plastic White's I've owned tho. I still have an old blue-box Coinmaster 6000/Di. 30 years old and still hummin'. I have no doubt though that the White's will be as durable, if not more so than the Garrett.

I agree about the trigger pinpointing too. Guess I'll have to see how that right-hand-drive headphone jack is too, but my mind's already working on a simple mod to make it livable if it's an annoyance. It shouldn't be a problem to run a short 1/4 plug extension to the left side of the control head and fasten it somehow. No big deal.

Best of luck in the (hopefully) upcoming season. Save some for me!
