Hello All,
Well I guess you all will be hearing allot from me as soon as I get my Sovereign GT, and the finds start screaming to the surface. I spent weeks pouring over detector literature and settled on the Sovereign GT. I had an Explorer SE, A great machine but not my cup of tea. I had an original sovereign years ago and I welcome one back to my arsenal.
I liked the no nonsense beeps and go's deep aspect of the Sovereigns.
Well any tips would be great and appreciated. I am primarily an old coin hunter, But I like to hit the wet salty sand once in a while. That is why i choose the sovereign over a Fisher f75, Whites Dfx, and a Garrett GTI 2500. All good machines but not versatile enough for me. Plus I think one can get spoiled by a meter and visual target id. I am more of a tones guy. But I will contradict myself slightly. I may eventually try out the new 180 scaled sovereign digital meter. Are there any sovereign users out there who like to go by the tones the most?

Well thanks for reading and HH
Jason

I have just started using my GT, 3 trips out to be exact so I am far from a pro but so far I am very happy. Was a little tossed at first but have printed a bunch of tips off this forum which I have in a book, and what I could not anwser with that was taken care of here. I am only using tones now although I have a meter and am starting to be able to tell what it is by the way it sounds, still a lot to learn but its not a convoluted mess of adjustments pretty much set and go, simple as you stated. I have never owned another detector but can't see how you will be let down with this one, I'm a daisy fresh rookie and my third trip produced gold:detecting:. HH. Here is one of the tips that I got off here I'll post more for ya later

Hey thanks Silverstar Man, for your response, I will follow those settings you posted.
I had a sovereign xs years ago and I can already tell the GT has the extra features i wanted in the XS at the time. So I will be new at the GT as well with all its new features since the XS. I wanted to get some info on pinpointing with the Sunray S-8 coil. I don't have the detector yet I only ordered it an hour ago. But I will definitely re-read and apply any tips I read now. I look forward to getting out with my new toy.
Thanks again

Hi Tony,

Can you tell me what is the purpose of going from disc to all metal and then back to disc? I believe Sovs, like Explorers take care of the ground balancing themselves in disc mode.

Thanks,
Neil

Hope you have a big scoop and don't mind digging deep holes.

Hope you have a pouch big enough to carry a pound of coins + jewelry.

Hope you don't get tired of digging up coins that nobody else can reach with other detectors on salt water beaches.

Hope you're ready for tennis elbow from shaking out your scoop.

Spend at least one season without using a meter. At least. Learn to use the machine by sound alone. The meter is actually pretty useful but not until you learn how to use the machine without it.

Seriously. Great machine. You're going to have a ton of fun. Good luck.

Neil I am not Tony I just copied that off one of his posts, but I think starting in all metal is to ensure there is no metal in the area before checking to see what the max setting you can get the sens to is, ensuring you are getting the best possible performance.HH

I feel that for someone new to the Sovereign series of detectors it is best to use auto to help with the learning of the detector. In auto the threshold will run smoother and you wont have as much nulling and false signals to confuse a beginner.Once you get to know the Sovereign better is when running it in manual seems to work out better.
Some of the reason to set the threshold in all metal while the coil is in the air and not close to any metal is to get that slight hum of a threshold needed before going to disc. Also on the GT using the silent search or any that use the silent search mod it helps to get the threshold set correctly. Now it will work silent in disc like it suppose to and yet still when switching to pinpoint it has the threshold for pinpointing the target.

Just ordered cjc's book on "Finding gold, silver and coins with the Minelab Sovereign" not sure if anyone has told you about this resource. I have not read it yet but he really seems to know his stuff based on his posts and his book is said to be a great resource. Just send him a PM and he can give you ordering information.
